If tropical islands are your thing, which, if I had to take a wild guess, I’m sure they are… then you’ll absolutely love Panglao Island in the Philippines.

Located in the Visayas region of the country, part of the Bohol province, Panglao is known for its white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and buzzing marine life.

It also happens to be a diver’s paradise with famous spots like Balicasag Island attracting underwater enthusiasts from all over the world. Think rich coral reefs and an abundance of colourful marine life.

The white sand beaches are also second to none. Alona Beach is one of the most popular beaches on the island, boasting a whole bunch of bars and restaurants as well as some pretty epic accommodations.

But it’s not only about the water-based activities – there are caves, historical landmarks, and of course, epic views that will have you pinching yourself.

But let me not get too carried away – I’m here to tell you about the best hotels in Panglao. So, strap yourself in, and let’s get cracking!

Selection Criteria

Before I get into the real crux of the article, I think it’s important to lay out a few important criteria to consider before booking a hotel in Panglao. While they might seem pretty obvious, they are definitely crucial to think about before booking a spot and making that financial commitment.

At the end of the day, you don’t want to get burnt, stay in a shitty place and ruin your Philippines backpacking trip. Especially if it could be easily avoided by doing proper research.

So, when choosing a hotel always consider the following:

  • Location: We hear about location a lot when travelling and it’s probably one of the first things I think about prior to booking a place to stay. I’ll look up the address and check it out on a map to see what it’s close to, what transport links are close by, and local bars and restaurants. And if you’re travelling in Panglao, how far it is from the white sand beaches?
  • Customer reviews and ratings: Another great way to establish how good a place is or isn’t, is through customer reviews and ratings. While this isn’t foolproof, it’s usually pretty accurate, especially with websites like Booking.com that have a great, accurate review system. You can seamlessly browse past customers’ reviews and get a real idea of what to expect.
  • Amenities and services: These are another two crucial factors that come into play when it comes time to book a hotel. We generally choose accommodations based on the facilities provided because these can make or break a trip. They are also the difference between an average stay and a super comfortable and sometimes slightly bougie one.
  • Price range: Lastly, and sometimes considered to be the most important consideration, is price. It’s also often the elephant in the room especially when sharing or travelling with mates who aren’t on the same budget page as you. Whether you’re a baller and want the cream of the crop or are travelling on a tight budget, there’s something here for everyone.

Right, I feel that I’ve given you a good, solid base to work from and we can move on the the good stuff. Now, let’s find the best places to stay in Panglao for YOU!

    Top Hotels in Panglao

The Philippines in general is such an epic destination and one that cannot be missed when visiting Southeast Asia. The islands are obviously a no-brainer for those who love the beach, outdoors, and of course, playing in the ocean. But are equally as great for a chilled and relaxing holiday of doing sweet f-all.

Here are some of my favourite hotels on the island:

    Secret Garden Resort Panglao Island

    Secret Garden Resort Panglao Island

Nestled in the heart of Panglao Island, Secret Garden Resort is the ideal peaceful and intimate retreat for budding travellers. The resort is known for its lush tropical gardens, serene ambience, and exceptional service and hospitality. I mean, what more could you ask for?

The accommodations on site are both cosy and well-designed, from comfortable rooms to spacious villas. They’re all equipped with modern amenities so you can rest assured that you will have everything you need for a more than comfortable stay.

In addition, there is an epic outdoor swimming pool, a bar, and a restaurant offering both local and international cuisine. The beauty is that the resort is also a little way away from the main touristy beaches so you’ll feel less amongst the craziness. It also serves as the perfect base to explore some of the best things to do in Bohol and discover more of the Central Visayas region.

Pro Tip: If you wanna go diving in Panglao, be sure to hit up Alex — he’s a LEGEND and really knows his stuff… both under AND above water. Just reach out via WhatsApp and let him know I sent you: +44 7812 648968.

    Bella Napoli Resort & Resto

Bella Napoli Resort and Resto Panglao

It’s all in the name here – an Italian-inspired resort in Panglao that combines cosy accommodations with modern comfort. The resort has a pretty laid-back which is ideal for those seeking a tranquil retreat to fully relax and unwind.

Now, one of the main attractions in Panglao is the beaches, of course, but Bella Napoli takes it one step further with its restaurant. Not only does it serve local Filipino dishes, but great Italian cuisine too. Think pizza, pasta, and of course, fresh seafood. There’s even an Italian breakfast on offer in the mornings which will have you belting out Mama Mia all the way to the beach.

But it would be rude not to mention the beaches since this is an island getaway, right? San Isidro Beach is within walking distance and ready for you to take full advantage of with long lazy days tanning and swimming.

    Alona Vida Beach Hill Resort

Alona Vida Beach Hill Resort Panglao

Nestled atop a hill (the name might’ve given it away), Alona Vida Beach Hill Resort is known for its stunning panoramic views. What’s better than gazing out over those tropical turquoise waters and lush surroundings while sipping on a local malted beverage? Not much, I tell you, not much!

Now, I know it’s all about the beaches and swimming in the sea here, but if for some reason you get bored of that, there’s always the outdoor pool. Take advantage of the pool-side loungers under umbrellas keeping you safe from the hot tropical sun.

I know we all tend to get caught up in the everyday hustle and bustle of life, but it’s so important to escape once in a while. Alona Vida Resort will also not break the bank so it’s an ideal spot for those more budget-conscious travellers.

    Blue Planet Panglao

    Blue Planet Panglao

The beauty of Blue Planet Panglao is that it’s a relatively small hotel with 14 rooms, so it’s much quieter than some other places. So, if more serene and quieter places are your vibe, then it’s the spot for you. There’s also a focus on sustainability here and the hotel blends nature and modern comfort into one beautifully eco-friendly package.

There’s a stunning garden on-site with lots of local, indigenous foliage that really gives the feeling that you’re surrounded by nature. The hotel also features an epic outdoor pool area but it’s also only five minutes away from Alona Beach so you’ll have the best of both worlds.

Something we often overlook is the staff and this can really make or break an experience. And the staff at Blue Planet really add to the experience and elevate it to the next level.

Best Western Plus The Ivywall Resort Panglao

Now, I don’t normally choose a place solely based on the food it serves (I kinda do, but we’ll keep that between us). However, it’s definitely a big drawcard here. The restaurant is open all day, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner but the breakfast buffet is the winner. It changes up daily and will definitely fill you up and set the tone for a day of exploring.

For those who like to keep in shape on their travels, there’s a fitness centre on-site. If you’d prefer a bit of pampering, there’s also a full spa and wellness centre for those mani, pedi, and exfoliating charcoal facemasks. Thy body is thy temple, remember.

Lastly, Alona Beach is literally steps away from the resort so you can almost roll out of bed and onto the white sands for a day of relaxing. If you wish to step it up a notch and not only have a dip, there are plenty of opportunities for diving and snorkelling. There’s a whole other world down there!

    Henann Premier Coast Resort Panglao

    Get Insured BEFORE Visiting Panglao

I don’t travel anywhere without insurance, and neither should you. Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Panglao.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
