If you’re planning an epic backpacking adventure through Iceland, then visiting Akureyri is an absolute must. It’s not called the northern gem just for fun – it really stands up to its name and you’ll soon find out why.
Akureyri is also a great stop if you’re planning on exploring Iceland’s Ring Road by car or van so bear that in mind when planning your trip. Right, let’s dive in and kick things off with a bang here!

One of the most unmissable activities to do when visiting Scandinavia is to witness the Northern Lights aka Aurora Borealis. The beauty of the city of Akureyri is that it is only about 100 km (60 mi) south of the Arctic Circle. What does this mean? Well, casually, it makes it one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in the entire country. No biggie!
The combination of the strong Aurora, as well as minimal light pollution, means that you will be treated to incredible light shows on clear winter nights. There are some great spots in the outskirts of the city where you will be oohing and ahhing the night away.
2. Hop on a whale-watching boat trip
I bet you didn’t know that the North Coast of Iceland has some of the best whale-watching spots in the entire country. Well, believe it, because it’s true! This year-round activity is possible thanks to incredibly nutrient-rich waters that are home to orcas, humpbacks, blue whales, minkes, and dolphins.
The best way to experience these mighty gentle giants in their natural habitat is to hop onboard a ship or boat and set sail from Akureyri Habour. You will also be killing two birds with one stone here as you will also be discovering Eyjafjörður, which happens to be the longest fjord in Iceland. If you’re lucky, you might even get to see some of the less common mammals like harbour porpoises and white-beaked dolphins. That will give you bragging rights amongst your friends for sure!
3. Visit the local botanical gardens
One of my favourite things to do in Akureyri in summer is to visit Listagarðurinn, the local botanical gardens. You’ll be surprised to know that the sun barely dips below the horizon during the summer months so it’s a great day or “night time” activity. I say that in inverted commas because the nights are almost as bright as the days!
The gardens opened in 1912 and are home to thousands of plant species including colourful flowers, shrubs, and mature trees. It’s the ideal way to relax and unwind on a sunny afternoon as you stroll around, taking in the sights and smells. There’s also a great little cafe on-site to enjoy a cold drink or a hot brew while taking it all in. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention – entry is free too. Winning!

4. Stroll through the Old Town
Another great activity that won’t cost you a dime is to stroll through the Akureyri Old Town. It gives you that authentic Scandinavian feel as you wander about in one of the oldest parts of the city. A great route is to follow Aðalstræti as it meanders between the forested hillsides and the mighty Eyjafjörður Fjord.
You will pass by many traditional houses and street layouts that are synonymous with Icelandic culture and will give you insight into the local way of life. The colourful houses also provide perfect photo opportunities for that new profile picture or even to show how much you love to travel on your dating app profile.
5. Go for a hike in the local mountains
If you’re an avid outdoor enthusiast, then a great way to get out and into the fresh air is to hit the local hiking trails. Just outside of the city, to the south-west, is Mount Súlur and there is a great hiking trail that takes you to its summit of 1210m. Think of uninterrupted views over the city and the fjord and plenty of fresh air to cleanse the lungs.
If you’re anything like me, then you’ll enjoy getting your heart rate up and burning a few calories after indulging in the local cuisine and craft beers. The trail takes about six hours to complete, depending on your fitness level and pace, so make sure to leave enough time in the day. But don’t worry about getting lost at night in the summer because the sun barely sets, remember. “Night” hike anyone?
PRO TIP: First-time visitors take note! Winter does get very snowy and specialist climbing equipment is required! If you are unsure, rather seek local advice before heading out. The last thing you want is to put yourself in a potentially life-threatening situation.
6. Relax and have a brew at the beer spa
One of the more unique things to do in Akureyri is to visit the local beer spa, which combines beer and hot springs in an interesting way. Now, you’re probably thinking to yourself “What on earth is a beer spa?” and the answer is something that you likely won’t expect. Beer contains live yeasts and cultures that have proven to be good for the skin. So, at the beer spa, you have the opportunity to soak in a beer hot tub while quenching your thirst sipping on a local brew.
Einstök is one of the local speciality beers that is brewed in Akureyri which is amongst some of the beers you will get to taste. It’s the perfect way to relax, unwind, and soak away your problems, all the while learning about how Icelandic beer is made.

If you’re into diving deeper into the local culture and history of Akureyri, then the best option is to visit the local museum. There is a permanent exhibition that is centred on life in the city as well as an exhibition that changes from time to time.
If you’re in the mood to take a break from the more adventurous side of life, then it’s the perfect morning or afternoon activity to keep you entertained for a couple of hours. The funny thing about history and museums is that you can be entirely indifferent to them your whole life until you open up your eyes to the wonderful world of travel. All of a sudden you’re delving into the Viking battles that once took place back in the Middle Ages.
8. Visit the “Waterfall of the Gods”
Goðafoss Waterfall is known as the “Waterfall of the Gods” and it’s easy to see how it got this name. It’s one of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in the entire country, with huge volumes of water moving every minute. Water from the Skjálfandafljót River drops from a height of 12 meters before crashing down into the pools below. The 30-meter-wide waterfall is really a spectacular sight, especially if you’re lucky enough to catch it with the Northern Lights as a backdrop.
The drive to Goðafoss is also incredibly scenic and in itself is an experience as you traverse the Icelandic countryside. There’s the stunning Fnjoskadalur Valley, the surrounding mountains, and of course, Eyjafordur Bay with its incredible views.
9. Unwind in the geothermal Forest Lagoon
Now, all this adventuring and all this travel can take its toll on your body. But not to worry, there’s a great way to relax, destress, and rejuvenate – a visit to the geothermal Forest Lagoon. Iceland is known as the Land of Fire and Ice, a somewhat paradoxical picture. Freezing winter temperatures coupled with plenty of geothermal energy. This has led to plenty of naturally heated pools forming around the country and one of them in particular that cannot be missed.
The geothermal Forest Lagoon, located on the outskirts of Akureyri, is the most unique of all of the country’s heated pools. It’s surrounded by trees and provides unparalleled views over the Eyjafjörður fjord. The large infinity pool is also equipped with swim-up bars for all those refreshment needs. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a bistro, cold plunge pool, and a Finnish sauna. Relax mode engaged!

Calling all adrenalin junkies out there – this is something that will tickle your fancy. How does a zipline tour over The Glerárgil (Glass River Canyon) sound to you? The canyon essentially cuts the city in half and the two halves are joined by means of a bridge. But I always say, why use the bridge when you can take the zipline? In fact, there are a total of 5 ziplines that zig and zag over the canyon high above the river below.
It’s a super fun activity for the whole family, although is best suited for those who prefer a bit more adventure and excitement. The course takes about 2-hours depending on your group size and how quickly you move between ziplines so it’s great for a morning or afternoon activity.
11. Get festive and visit the Christmas House
One of the favourite things to do in Akureyri during the winter holidays is to visit the Christmas House, known locally as the Jólahúsið. It’s a fun activity for the whole family, especially the kids, and really helps to get everyone in the Christmas spirit. The good news is that it’s open all year round but it’s obviously particularly fun to visit during the time leading up to Christmas itself.
Inside, it’s a real Christmas wonderland and you’ll learn about all the Icelandic traditions surrounding the holiday. From Yule Lads and Gryla to local festive spirits and all things Christmassy.
12. Hit the local ski slopes
Wintertime in any mountainous region around the world usually means one thing – ski season. Akureyri is no different and the city and surrounding mountains are often covered in blankets of powdery white snow just waiting to be shredded and carved. Hlidarfjall ski resort is a must for any avid skier or snowboarder, boasting some 26 marked runs suitable for all skill levels. There are even some cross-country trails for those who are keen to test their endurance and put in the time on the skis.
Winter in Iceland does, unfortunately, come with its downside – shorter days. But you didn’t think that was going to be a problem, did you? The slopes are lit up with bright floodlights and the snow goes on (see what I did there). The season runs from late November until early May so if you find yourself visiting during that time, get ready for some action-packed days on the slopes.
13. Dive in at the local swimming pool
Swimming pools are synonymous with every city and town in Iceland and the bathing culture is huge in the country. Akureyri is no different and Icelanders of all ages love to head to the local swimming pool to relax, have a dip, and socialize. You know what they say, if you want to experience a place like a local, then you need to do as the locals do.
This is a great place to take the kids and there isn’t just one but two 25-meter outdoor pools. There is also an indoor pool, water slides, and a splash pool so there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. The best part of it all? The pools are all geothermally heated so you can head for a swim any time of the year.

It is believed that the area around the Glerá River and beyond is elf country. There’s even a map of the entire area that was drawn up by Erla Stefánsdóttir, an Icelandic fortune teller/psychic/forecaster of the future. She mapped out exactly where all the elves in the area lived. Whether you believe in this or not, it’s still a great place to go hiking and the surrounding scenery is spectacular.
The gentle walk takes you along the Glerá River and into the forest beyond where you can take a relaxing walk and get out in the fresh air. It’s also a fun activity for the whole family and the kids will particularly enjoy searching for the fairytale characters.
15. Visit the Lutheran church of Akureyri
Located above the town centre, the Akureyri Lutheran Church is a real symbol of the city. It was designed by architect Gudjon Samuelsson and was officially consecrated in 1940. Now, the church is special for a number of reasons, but mainly due to its size, incredible stained glass window above the altar, and majestic facade. It is said that the facade symbolizes the basalt columns in Svartifoss waterfall.
Now, the beauty of the Lutheran Church is that it’s one of the free things to do in Akureyri. Yup, you read right. You can visit the church free of charge, wander around inside, and if you’re religious, you might consider stopping off to pray.

How to Get Around Akureyri
Akureyri is the second-largest city in Iceland behind Reykavik, although it is more than half the size of the capital city at around 125km2 (53 sq mi). Getting around is pretty easy, with a lot of the city being accessible by bicycle and by foot thanks to established walkways and an ever-growing network of cycle paths.
Electric scooters
Electric scooters have also become a popular option for getting around, a service provided by a company called Hopp, and are scattered around the city. They cost around $0.75 to start the ride and around $0.20 a minute thereafter.

There’s also a hop-on hop-off bus that operates during times when large cruise ships are docked. The bus stops at several popular tourist sites around Akureyri and is also a great way to see the city. It will set you back about $45 for a full-day pass.
public bus
The best way to get around the city, however, is to make use of the public bus service. The buses operate in a circular loop around Akureyri and takes around 30 – 50 minutes to complete the journey. The best part of it all? The public bus service is FREE – yes, you read the right!
