Tucked away in the lush landscapes of southwest England, Devon offers more than just rugged coastlines and rolling hills. I mean, ok, it might be known for three main things; cream tea, scones and cold swimming. So, when you think of Devon, you don’t necessarily think of spiritual yoga retreats…until now!
Sitting right by the ocean, it’s no wonder this area is becoming popular with new options popping up year after year. The serine and stunning surroundings create the perfect tranquil vibe to whisk away your worries and transport you to yogi paradise.
Devon’s tranquil countryside provides the perfect backdrop to pause, reset, and reconnect with yourself. So, if you want to take your British holiday to a whole new level, you will love this guide on the best yoga retreats in Devon.

Why You Should Consider a Yoga Retreat in Devon
Devon is a classic English seaside location that is a must on any trip around the UK.
It has rolling green hills, stunning cliff edges and hidden gems throughout. Which makes for a pretty great retreat destination if you ask me! You can fully disconnect from city life and prioritise your healing here whilst enjoying all the other activities the area has to offer.
Just spending time basking in nature can have a dramatic effect on your mental and physical well-being. However, Devon has more than that to offer. The thing is, Devon is well known for its large cold dipping culture that can have transformative benefits on your physical health (but more on that later).

Alongside that, going on a retreat is an opportunity for you to face the feelings you have been avoiding but in a healthy way.
Retreats offer you a space to unwind from the chaos of daily life and truly discover what is important to you. You often leave the retreats with a new perspective on things in your life that you were struggling with before.
The thing that I always say about yoga retreats is that they are what you make of them.
Sure, you can go on a yoga retreat and spend a lot of time reflecting and being by yourself but the more that you get immersed in the activities, the better you’ll feel once the retreat ends.
What Can You Expect From a Yoga Retreat in Devon?
The best way I can describe the yoga retreats in Devon is…refreshing.
The thing about England is that it’s still very new to the whole ‘spiritual’ concept; so these types of retreats are not the same as ones you would experience in Thailand or Bali.
BUT, don’t let that deter you. English retreats still have so much to offer, just in a different way.
The main practice on Devon yoga retreats is well, yoga. Depending on the retreat, you’ll get to try different styles such as Vinyasa, Nidra yoga, and more. Each session will be guided by a trained yoga teacher.

Devon is also right by the ocean so you’ll get to spend a lot of the time by the beach, which honestly, is such a highlight of any retreat. This location also has a lot of lakes which is why cold dipping is such a popular activity here.
Okay so, let’s talk about cold dipping. Cold dipping is just as it sounds. Dipping into a very, very, very cold ocean or lake. It has incredible benefits for your immune system and honestly, the rush of endorphins you get after is worth it. So although your body will tell you not to do it, you should try anyway!
Alongside that, you’ll be served daily nourishing meals provided by the retreat and you’ll stay in some pretty top-tier accommodation too.
How Do You Pick The Right Yoga Retreat in Devon For You?
There are many things you need to keep in mind when picking a UK yoga retreat in Devon.
A retreat can be a fairly big expense so you need to understand exactly what the retreat experience will be like.
So ask yourself “What do I want to get out of this experience?”
If you just want to meet new people and have a fun experience, you can probably opt for a shorter, cheaper retreat.
However, if you are going on this retreat for inner healing and to overcome stress, a longer retreat (with more practices) will be far better suited to you.

And whilst all these retreats are pretty tame, if this is your first ‘spiritual’ experience, throwing yourself into a 6-day retreat probably isn’t the best idea.
Sometimes retreats can be a little overwhelming if you’re not used to these kinds of practices, so I suggest starting small.
You can find more information on the retreats website where they usually state if the retreat is beginner friendly so I recommend checking that.
Here are some other aspects you will need to consider.
Location
As for the location of the yoga retreats in Devon, you really have two options, though with either you’ll be in some of the most beautiful places in the UK.
You’ll either be situated by the beach where you’ll wake up to the sounds of the ocean and spend time practising sunset yoga in the evenings.
Or, you can have a more luxurious experience (usually in a large house) located in a secluded location somewhere amongst Devon’s rolling countryside hills. If you choose this option, daily hikes will likely be on the agenda.
Whilst you should choose your location based on the type of activities you would like to partake in, Devon has plenty of transport available. So, you’ll never be too far from popular areas.
Practices
I mentioned this beforehand but when it comes to practices, yoga retreats in Devon are more limited than retreats you may have experienced in Thailand or Bali.
However, that does make these retreats extremely beginner-friendly.
Of course, yoga is the main priority during these retreats where you’ll learn different yoga practices such as Nidra yoga and Vinyasa yoga.
Depending on the retreat, this will either be a basic practice where you learn how to connect with your body. Or, there are retreats that offer more in-depth yoga practices that will strengthen your ability.

Additionally, breathwork and meditation practices go hand in hand with yoga so it’s worth joining in on these activities too. They can help to clear your mind in a whole new way.
When it comes to more unique activities, hiking and cold-water swimming are the main options of choice.
Even people who aren’t visiting Devon for a yoga retreat specifically travel here to find the hidden gems to cold swim in. And honestly, you might hate the thought of this but the endorphin rush can truly change how you show up for the rest of the day.
Price
The prices of these retreats range from around £600 to £900.
The more affordable retreats usually offer fewer practices and are often shorter, however, you can still have a great experience on a lower budget.
Whereas the retreats that cost a little more are usually packed with activities throughout the day and offer more healing practices.
I’ve been on both affordable and more expensive retreats and honestly, they are both great. I always recommend shorter retreats to newbies so you can dip your toe in the water. Whereas if you already understand this world a lot, I would say to invest in a more expensive retreat as you’ll get more out of it.
Perks
The perks on these retreats are fairly limited, however, I am sure if you ask for additional services such as a massage or in-depth yoga session, they will be more than willing to help. So I would suggest contacting them!
That being said, some of these retreats do offer guided coaching perks. This is where you’ll have time to sit one-on-one with the guides. During this time, you can chat through the struggles you are currently facing and they can help you overcome these challenges.
Duration
The retreats range from three days to seven days and although you’ll probably experience more within a longer retreat, both can still have a dramatic effect on your wellbeing.
I’ve made some of my best friends on a three-day retreat and I’ve had some of the most incredible experiences on a seven-day retreat.
It’s more about the time that you can commit to a retreat. During your time there, you won’t have much time to work so you’ll need to decide how long you can be MIA for.
