Albania has fully taken over as Europe’s hottest travel destination this year. With sick views from the Albanian Alps and some of the clearest waters I’ve ever seen on the coast, the country is full of gorgeous destinations to visit.
However, one of the biggest issues I had when travelling to Albania was the lack of information on the internet.
Seriously, trying to figure out where the bus to Tirana left from, or how much a taxi would cost to Gjirokaster was like living in the freaking stone age. So don’t even get me started on trying to figure out where to stay in Albania.
At least my struggles weren’t in vain.
After much research and trial and (lots of) error, I have compiled a list of the best places to stay in Albania, based on personal experience and recommendations from fellow travellers.

Albania has been on every traveller’s radar this past year. The country promises gorgeous beaches, delicious food, and low prices, and boy does it deliver! This small country is full of magical little towns and cities that will have you wishing you had visited sooner. Plus, with it being one of the cheapest places to visit in Europe, you’ll really get your money’s worth.
With a brutal history of recent communist rule and a troubled economy, Albania has remained relatively untouched by mass tourism. But this also means the country isn’t the easiest to navigate. Prepare for sweaty buses that don’t leave on time, a language barrier, and some of the worst roads in Europe.
But with that said, it’s worth the extra effort as you’ll be rewarded with some of the most beautiful hikes, beach days, and mouth-watering food all for a fraction of the cost of most “Euro Summer” destinations.
If it’s your first time in Albania, you gotta start off in the main city, Tirana. The capital is quirky, colourful, and full of life. It’s a great base to get your bearings in the country and also serves as the main transportation hub.
While most of Albania is cheap, if you’re looking to really make your pennies stretch, head to the second biggest city, Shkodra. It’s a beautiful city in the North with plenty of parks, museums, and sights to see.
Families will love the seaside town of Sarande. The city has a more relaxed vibe, making it the perfect place for groups looking to unwind and enjoy some quality time together.
If you prefer to spend your days hiking in nature, then you’re going to absolutely thrive in the Albanian Alps. The hiking trails here are some of the most underrated in Europe and some sick mountain views.
Lastly, get your romance on at one of the epic beach clubs in Ksamil. It’s the perfect spot for couples who are looking to soak up some sun, sip on cocktails, and enjoy some quality time together.

Enough with the teasing, let’s fully get into the best areas to stay in Albania. Get ready to smell the intoxicating scent of marinated goat, sip on sweet and strong coffee, and indulge in a 2-euro beer. The Balkans are calling baby!
1. Tirana – Best Place to Stay in Albania for your First Time
Tirana is the capital of Albania and there is no better place to start your travels! The city has come a long way from its communist past and now has one of the best blends of old and new in the Balkans. On just about every corner you’ll see locals sipping their espressos, chatting with friends, and going about their day-to-day lives.

This is the ultimate destination for those who got A’s on their history exams in school. You’ll really get a feel for the history and culture of Albania by exploring Tirana’s museums, art galleries, and architectural gems. The food is also some of the best in the country—juicy meats, warm byreks, and oof, the stuffed grape leaves, also known as japrak, are to die for!
Suite Dolce Vita | Best Suite in Albania
Suite Dolce Vita is my favourite stay in Tirana. The location is absolutely primo, Skaderburge Square is just a quick 1km away, and the apartment is so spacious you almost feel like you’re at home. Breaking away from the Eastern Euro vibes, this suite is actually quite modern with its chic furnishings and trendy decor.
Vanilla Sky Boutique Hostel | Best Hostel in Tirana
Tirana is an excellent city for solo travellers, and the Vanilla Sky Hostel is a must-stay in the city. The boutique hostel is like a modern-century design oasis. The hostel offers a variety of rooms ranging from dorms to private rooms, all with moody vibes. With its prime location in the Blloku neighbourhood, you’ll be steps away from the best trendy bars, cafes, and restaurants. It’s my favourite hostel in Tirana for sure.
Tirana Center Apartment | Best Condo in Tirana
If you’re looking for more than a hotel room, this condo in the centre of Tirana is the perfect choice. With a stunning living area and a separate bedroom, this apartment is spacious and perfect for a family or group of friends. Just 5 minutes from the main square, you can enjoy nights out and explore the city without having to travel far.

Pretty much anywhere in Albania there is a budget option, but Shkoder is the entryway to Northern Albanian where you can pretty much get by on $30 a day. It’s the second largest city in Albania but feels much more like a small town.
The cobblestone streets are filled all hours of the day with locals and tourists sipping on lemon sodas and cappuccinos at the many cafes. It was my absolute favourite place to people-watch and take in a different side of Albania. Surrounded by mountains and with a beautiful castle overlooking the city, there’s no shortage of views or things to do.
Shkoder Guest House | Best Guesthouse in Shkoder
The Shkoder Guest House is the best stay for families on a budget in Shkoder. The traditional style guesthouse will give you an authentic Albanian experience. The rooms are clean and comfortable with plenty of space for everyone. The location is great as it’s near the bus stop, and the owners will let you leave your bags while you explore the Alps.
The Wanderers Hostel | Best Hostel in Shkoder
Budget travellers will love The Wanderers Hostel. While the rooms are basic, (dorms do have curtains though, yay!) the common areas are a vibe. With cheap beers for sale, and loads of other backpackers to meet, this is the perfect place for a solo traveller. The legends that work here will also help sort out your Theth to Valbona hike.

I’m obsessed with this charming loft apartment in Shkoder. Located on the 8th floor of the main street you’ll have views for days from the patio. Sip your coffee and take in the quiet mornings below. The loft is bright and airy with windows and white walls. It is a perfect spot for digital nomads on a budget or those wanting a little privacy during their travels.
Things to see and do in Shkoder
- Hike around Lake Skadar National Park, the largest lake in the Balkans.
- Visit the ancient Rozafa Castle.
- Take a boat tour on Lake Koman, this is a great thing to do if you’re heading into the Alps!
- Explore the city centre and its mix of Ottoman, Venetian, and medieval architecture.
- Walk along the Mesi Bridge, a 13th-century arched stone bridge.
3. Sarande – Best Place to Stay in Albania for Families
If you’re travelling with your little ones, or maybe it’s a whole family affair, Sarande is the best place to stay in Albania. The coastal town has a little bit of everything for everyone, and there are endless places to stay and things to do!
With gorgeous blue waters, and multiple day trips and excursions to nearby beaches and towns, Sarande is the perfect destination for a family vacation. The town is definitely a tourist hub so navigating with kids is easier than in a remote area. You’ll find English spoken throughout, and there are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants and beach clubs.
Hotel Lindi | Best Hotel in Sarande
This hotel in Sarande might not look like much from the outside, but Hotel Lindi is a hidden gem. With its prime location near the centre of town and just steps away from the beautiful Ionian Sea, it’s hard to beat this hotel’s convenience. The rooms are splashed with color and the free breakfast makes mornings with little ones all the easier.
Yacht Villa | Best Villa in Sarande
Views on Views at this villa in Sarande. The Yacht Villas is a standard room with everything you need for a nice stay but where this villa really gets good is the incredible terrace! It opens right on up to the promenade and overlooks the many shades of blue of the Ionian Sea. With private access to the beach, I don’t think a Euro holiday looks better!
Seaside Apartment | Best Apartment in Sarande
The whole family will love this seaside apartment in Sarande. The highrise apartment gives the best beach views around and there’s nothing quite like waking up to the sound of waves crashing on the shore. With a two-minute walk to the beach and a five-minute walk to the city centre, you can come and go as you please.
Things to see and do in Sarande
- Spend a day at a beach club where the kids can play while the parents kick back on loungers.
- Take a fun day trip to Blue Eye, a natural spring with crystal-clear water perfect for swimming.
- Check out the ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Stroll through Sarande’s old town, with its charming cobblestone streets and traditional Albanian architecture.
- Hop on a boat tour around the Ksamil Islands; the water is some of the clearest I’ve ever seen!
- Take the ferry across to Corfu for the day, or a little weekend escape.
4. Ksamil – Best Place to Stay in Albania for Couples
Ksamil is the dreamiest of beach destinations in Albania, making it perfect for a cheeky little getaway for you and your partner! But be prepared for PEOPLE. Ksamil used to be a secret escape for Albanians, and thanks to Instagram, it has now exploded onto the international scene.
Despite this, it’s still a perfect place to base yourself on and as long as you avoid the peak summer months of July and August (when everyone else in Europe is on holiday). You’ll find some of the most gorgeous beaches, epic beach clubs that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, and some of the best seafood restaurants in Albania.
Otto Hotel | Best Hotel in Ksamil
The Otto Hotel is exactly what you want when staying in a beach town. Crisp white sheets, modern decor, and a rooftop dining area with stunning views of the sea. The breakfast is included and it’s full of fresh fruit, pastries, and yummy omelettes. The hotel is only 200 meters from the beach, so early morning dips are def on the schedule.
Villa Denis Ksamil | Best Villa in Ksamil
For a low-key getaway, Villa Denis is one of the best stays in Ksamil. About a 10-minute walk from the beach and downtown area of Ksamil, you’ll be able to enjoy quiet evenings in the garden or on your private balcony. The rooms have everything you need for a comfortable stay, including air conditioning (thank god!!) and a kitchenette.
Arameras Beach Resort | Best Resort in Ksamil
Talk about living in luxury! The Aramera Beach Resort is absolutely necessary for a romantic stay in Ksamil. Spend your morning sipping coffee by the lush infinity pool and then take down your electric buggy to the secluded beach for the afternoon. The villas bring out all the Mediterranean vibes with natural fibre furniture and gorgeous views from private balconies.
Things to see and do in Ksamil
- Spend the day at Mirror Beach, a beautiful white-sand beach that provides a more secluded and peaceful atmosphere than other beaches in Ksamil.
- Go on a full-day boat tour to explore the nearby islands and caves.
- Chill at one of the resort pools or find a spot on the beach to soak up some sun.
- Visit the historical St. Georges Monastery, located just a short drive from Ksamil.
- A must-do in Ksamil is to take a day trip to Gjirokaster.
- Spot some of the many remaining bunkers that are dotted around the country
- Take photos of all the art installations scattered throughout the beach clubs, it’s very tulum-esque.
5. Albanian Alps/Theth/Valbona – Best Place to Stay in Albania for Hiking
Take it in, the fresh mountain air, feel the dewyness of the grass beneath your feet, and breathe in deeply— this is what you’ll experience when staying in the Albanian Alps. Located in the northern part of Albania, the Alps are my favourite part of the country and I can’t tell you how quickly you need to get your ass there!
You’ll find the most charming bed and breakfasts and locally run inns in the small villages of Theth and Valbona. These are ideal bases for hiking trips through the rugged terrain of the Albanian Alps. The hike from Theth to Valbona is one of the most popular routes, taking you up and down the white-capped peaks and through lush valleys.
Guesthouse Prrockaj Theth | Best Guesthouse in Theth
Right at the foot of the Albanian Alps, Guesthouse Prrockaj is a glorious mix of rustic and modern. With large windows, you’ll wake up to gorgeous views of the mountains, and you’ll absolutely love the homey vibes and delicious traditional food served here.
