Freight House District
So what about the other side of North Virginia Avenue? The Freight House District was once the industrial heart of the city, but fell into decline in the ’90s and 2000s. More recently, it has seen a major revival as both the youth hub of the city and a growing tourist destination.
Midtown

Reno’s Top 3 Neighborhoods to Stay in
This unique destination in Nevada acts as a gateway to the old west. Reno has seen a lot of growth over the decades, and it shows no signs of stopping. It’s got everything Vegas has and more, making it more and more popular as a destination as the years go on. It should definitely be on your hitlist for an awesome staycation this year.
The city center is where all the action is at, so we’ve split it into three different neighborhoods.
Riverwalk District is the perfect choice for first-time visitors, as this is where you get to discover classic Reno. The bustling casinos, cosmopolitan restaurants, and vibrant parties that the city has become known for are all based here. It’s also next to the riverwalk – a unique urban hike along the banks of the river.
On the opposite side of the main strip, Freight House District has a more hip vibe. Contemporary cool can be found around every corner – with a range of breweries, local boutiques, and quirky cafés found across the area. This neighborhood offers some great deals on accommodation and dining, making it ideal for anyone traveling on a budget.
Midtown is the calmer cousin of Downtown Reno, offering many of the same attractions at a more laid-back pace. There’s also a better selection of family-friendly attractions, making this our top pick for those traveling with kids. South Virginia Avenue is the main strip here, but it definitely has a more peaceful vibe.
Still undecided? No worries! We’ve got more information on each neighborhood below to help you narrow down your options. We’ve even included our top accommodation and activity picks in each, to help you plan your itinerary.

Named after the hike that follows the Truckee River, it’s also a great destination for those interested in Reno’s natural attractions. This has created one of the most vibrant areas of Reno, with some cool alternative attractions on offer.
The Freight House District isn’t short of old-school attractions, either. The main difference here is that you’ll find many of the attractions and eateries are far more affordable. This is a fantastic destination if you’re traveling the USA on a budget.

- There are some great breweries on the junction between East 4th Street and Valley Road. Our favorite is the Depot Craft Brewery Distillery.
3. Midtown – Best Area in Reno for Families
On the other side of the river, Midtown has a more laid-back vibe than the two Downtown districts. This makes it a great choice for families. Whether you’re interested in nature, museums, or dining, you’ll find some great attractions in the area that will appeal to all ages.

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQs About Finding a Place to Stay in Reno
Here’s what people usually ask me about the areas of Reno and where to stay.
What To Pack For Reno
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

Final Thoughts on Where To Stay in Reno
Reno is a fascinating city that has a little something for everyone. Long trailing behind Las Vegas as the second most popular destination in Nevada, Reno is now starting to catch up. It’s a little bit more affordable and has more family-friendly options, while still enjoying the same relaxed pace of life.
For us, the neighborhood that really stands out is the Freight House District. Once one of the most industrial parts of the city, it has since grown to become a major tourist hub. It’s really well connected to both the Riverwalk District and Midtown, making it an ideal base for your trip.
That being said, the best place for you really depends on what you want to get out of your stay. If you’re more interested in classic entertainment then the Riverwalk District is the place for you. Prefer something easygoing? Head to Midtown! We hope we’ve managed to help you narrow down your options.
