In a popular country like Greece, Lefkada offers a peaceful escape from the tourist crowds. This island in the Ionian Islands is less crowded than other popular destinations, making it a great place to experience authentic Greek culture. It’s still super accessible as it’s connected to the mainland by a bridge, meaning no dreaded ferry journeys involved!

Despite its charm, there is limited information available online about Lefkada compared to other places in Greece. This makes it difficult to navigate where to stay to see what each neighbourhood has to offer.

This is where research is king! I’ve done all of the hard work for you – this guide fills you in on all the best neighbourhoods in Lefkada, along with accommodation recommendations and things to do in each place. I’ll make planning your Greece getaway and absolute dream.

Are you ready? Let’s get explorin’!

Lefkada’s Three Best Neighborhoods to Stay in

If you’re lucky enough to visit Lefkada island while backpacking through Greece, you’re in for a treat. Historic town centres, gorgeous seafood and unspoiled beaches await you on the island. Keep reading for the lowdown on where to stay, what to do, and why you should visit my top three neighbourhoods.

Lefkada town is the main hub of the island and the first neighbourhood you’ll visit when arriving from mainland Greece. It’s home to the best hotels in Lefkada, whether you’re looking for infinity pools, on-site restaurants or just a good sun lounger in the heat!

On Lefkada’s west coast is Agios Nikitas. Here you’re sure to find a little slice of authentic Greek heaven, with tourist numbers lower here. If you want to live like a local and even save some euros whilst you’re doing it, Agios Nikitas is the way to go.

Finally, on the east coast of Lefkada is Nidri. Whether you want beaches or mountains, Nidri has it all. This neighbourhood is particularly good for those yacht enthusiasts who want to rent during your holiday, as the water conditions are perfect for it here and is a heck of a lot cheaper for it than in mainland Greece.

Still not sure where to visit for your Greek getaway? Not to worry! I’m going to break down my three favourite neighbourhoods in more detail and give you the low down on the best hotels and hidden gems in the area.

1. Lefkada Town – Overall Best Place to Stay in Lefkada

The centre of Lefkada Island, Lefkada Town, is a quaint meeting place between the natural beauties of the island and mainland Greece. The moment you cross the bridge, you are greeted by this welcoming village.

As the main town on the island, Lefkada Town is the central hive of activity. Make no mistake, though – it is still very much a laid-back destination. To enjoy the Greek sunlight and discover the island’s numerous beaches, Lefkada Town is an excellent starting point.

Not only does it provide gorgeous waterfront settings for cafes (perfect for digital nomads), restaurants, and bars, but it also has cultural and historical treasures like the Folklore Museum and the Phonograph Museum. Visit the lengthy Gira Beach, which has shallow, blue waves, for a peaceful afternoon. Agios Ioannis Beach, a favourite spot for kitesurfers, has afternoon waves that are perfect for anyone feeling daring.

The historic centre is where you’ll find some stunning Greek buildings reflecting the traditions of the island. For history lovers, don’t miss the Museum of Lefkadian Folklore and the Archaeological Museum. This neighbourhood is also home to some excellent bars all within walking distance from the best hotels in Lefkada town, perfect for that sunset Pina Colada on the beach.

Pirofani | Best Budget Hotel in Lefkada Town

Pirofani, Lefkada Greece

Pirofani is a small boutique hotel on a little pedestrian street in a historical centre not far from the marina. It is surrounded by shops and cafes and is conveniently located near all of Lefkada’s main attractions. The staff are incredibly nice and attentive; they will go above and beyond to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. You get a lot of value for your money in these clean, bright and contemporary rooms.

Allure Central Boutique Hotel | Best Mid-Range Hotel in Lefkada Town

Sometimes, you just need the comfort of a hotel! This secret boutique hotel is only a stone’s throw from the beach. It is also nestled among the main attractions in Lefkada Town, with plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafés nearby. It’s well-liked by solo travellers visiting Greece thanks to the affordable prices on otherwise quite luxurious rooms. They even throw in complimentary breakfast – I’m a sucker for a free brekky.

Ageras Santa Marina | Best Airbnb in Lefkada Town

Ageras Santa Marina, Lefkada Greece

This apartment is a little bit out of town, but totally worth it if you want a unique experience! It’s located within a farmstead, meaning you get to enjoy a slice of rural Lefkada. Make no mistake, however – this apartment is truly luxurious. Guests have access to an outdoor swimming pool, and the apartment itself is stylishly designed with exposed beams.

2. Agios Nikitas – Coolest Place to Stay in Lefkada

Tucked away on the northwest coast of Lefkada, Agios Nikitas is a picture-perfect getaway. This little settlement, which is a typical fishing community, still retains its village beauty. Vibrantly coloured homes ascend the slope, providing a view of a tiny, secluded beach with glistening waves.

With even smaller tourism numbers than other bigger towns on the island, you will get to connect with locals and enjoy a slower pace of life. It’s also the only village at sea level, so you’re guaranteed to be within a few steps of the beach. Greece is known for being expensive, however, Lefkada Island is one of the cheapest islands and Agios Nikitas has some real hidden gems for bargain hunters.

Water so blue it doesn’t look real

The beach is great for families because it has soft sand and gentle waves. There’s also a stunning viewpoint off the road to Pefkoulia Beach that will leave your Instagram followers envious. You can find charming cafes with breathtaking sunset views and small shops offering regional goods here. It’s also a great spot for trying out local tavernas, especially if you want to grab some of the best souvlaki (the world’s first fast food) on Lefkada.

Take a water taxi for a little adventure to the remote paradise of Milos Beach, which is only reachable by boat or a scenic walk. Or take a trip to neighbouring Kathisma and explore the mysterious Vagelis Cave right next to the beach. If you have time on your hands, heading down to the south of the island to Porto Katsiki should definitely be part of your Lefkada itinerary.

Agios Nikitas is ideal for people looking to unwind amid breathtaking natural beauty because it has a slower pace of life and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic Greek experience.

La Casa D’ Irene | Best Budget Hotel in Agios Nikitas

La Casa D' Irene, Lefkada Greece

La Casa D’Irene is a gem of a place. Perched atop a hill, it offers unparalleled views of the sea. Every room has a TV, mini fridge and private bathroom and boasts its own terrace with an amazing panoramic view where you can watch the sunset over the sea in the evening. The complimentary breakfast is wonderful; this property is a true slice of Greece.

MELIKIRON LUXURY APARTMENTS | Best Luxury Hotel in Agios Nikitas

MELIKIRON LUXURY APARTMENTS, Lefkada Greece

The property is in one of the most stunning positions on Lefkada, with breathtaking panoramic views. The complex has all of the amenities you might want for your trip, including a terrace and a fully furnished kitchen. The bedrooms include excellent furnishings, and the owners’ hospitality is unparalleled. This is undoubtedly the best destination for a relaxing and peaceful getaway.

LEFKADA WHITE VILLA | Best Villa in Agiod Nikitas

LEFKADA WHITE VILLA, Lefkada Greece

This Airbnb is in a BEAUTIFUL setting. The Villa is exceptionally clean and comfortable, the view is breathtaking, and the swimming pool is a welcoming respite from the summer sun. The property features a large open floor plan and a well-equipped kitchen.

Things to See and Do Agios Nikitas:

Soaking up the rays
  1. Visit Milos Hidden Beach for some beautiful untouched sands – you may even have the place totally to yourself in shoulder season.
  2. Take a half-day kayaking excursion to explore an enchanted Blue Cave.
  3. Agios Nikitas Old Church is a unique historic attraction that serves as the heart of religion in the village to this day.
  4. Spend your days lounging at Milos beach, or head down south to Porto Katsiki.
  5. If you need some zen, embark on a blissful yoga retreat (its one of the best in Greece.)

3. Nidri – Best Neighborhood in Lefkada for Families to Stay In

As one of the busiest resort towns in Lefkada, Nidri teems with activity. Known for friendly locals and gorgeous mountain scenery, Nidri is the perfect spot for families heading to Lefkada’s east coast! This quaint community has a gorgeous natural harbour that is surrounded by vibrant cafes, eateries, and pubs. While energetic, it retains a village feel – you can walk the entire length in about 20 minutes.

Nidri has plenty to offer everyone. Adventurers can engage in water activities on beaches just a short drive away or take boat tours to adjacent islands and hidden coves. Families can unwind on the sand or have a cool swim beneath the gushing Nidri Waterfalls. If you head inland, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful mountains and great hiking trails if you want to burn those holiday calories one day.

Skyline view of Nidri, Lefkada
What. A. View!!!

I also reckon Nidri would make an excellent spot for couples looking for a romantic getaway. Nidri Beach is stunning and the scenic location is the perfect spot to catch the sunrise. Are you looking to sail the Ionian islands whilst you’re here? The yacht hire facilities are a little bit cheaper down here than they are in the north of the island if that’s the kind of thing that floats your boat (literally).

With a thriving nightlife and breathtaking sunsets over the Ionian Sea, the vibrant environment really comes alive in the evenings. Nidri perfectly balances great attractions and restaurants with small crowds, giving any traveller their own little slice of heaven.

Papatsas Center Houses | Best Budget Hotel in Nidri

Papatsas Center Houses, Lefkada Greece

The location is amazing, on the main street, close to the port. The property boasts cosy rooms that are extremely comfortable, well-equipped and well-cleaned. I loved taking in the panorama as I swam in the infinity pool – what a dream!

Avra Beach Hotel | Best Mid-Range Hotel in Nidri

Avra Beach Hotel, Lefkada Greece

Lefkada is already a pretty inexpensive destination, but this hotel has to take our top spot for travellers looking to hold back their spending! Despite this attractive price, it is located right on the beach – with a private space and sun loungers just for hotel guests. Rooms come with either sea or pool views, and there is a small taverna on the beach where you can try classic Greek treats.

Lefkada Serenity | Best Airbnb in Nidri

Lefkada Serenity, Greece

Lefkada Serenity is a welcoming, large villa with a beautiful sea view. It is self-contained, with two levels and a private swimming pool. It gives all of the amenities you’ll need for a relaxing vacation. The entire property is stunning: modern and well-equipped with breathtaking views and a great pool.

  1. Take a trip to Meganisi and discover the nearby beaches – it’s only a short ferry ride, and while you can stay on the island, I reckon it is best kept as a day trip.
  2. Lounge the afternoon away at Nidri Beach.
  3. Just a short drive into the hills is Anemómylos, a traditional windmill that makes a great photo spot.
  4. Take a day trip to the south of the island to visit Porto Katsiki.
  5. Put your hiking boots on and get to Nydri waterfalls, a stunning area of natural beauty with views of the mountains and olive trees.
  6. Enjoy the beauty of the Ionian Sea on a full-day cruise and swim in crystal-clear water.
  7. Nidri is the perfect spot to learn how to yacht due to the calm waters. Or hire a motorboat if you want an engine to do all the work for you.
  8. Burn off those pina colada calories and head inland to do some mountain biking in this beautiful region.

Here’s what people usually ask us about the areas of Lefkada and where to stay.

What To Pack For Lefkada

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.

Where is the best place to stay in Lefkada for couples?

Nidri is my biggest recommendation for couples coming to Lefkada! Not only does it have some of the best hotels in Lefkada, but there are some super romantic hotels here so you can have an idyllic getaway with your loved one.

Where are the best beaches in Lefkada?

Nidri Beach and Milos Beach are the best beaches in the neighbourhoods that I’ve mentioned. But Lefkada is a small island and if you have the time I’d definitely recommend heading down south and visiting Porto Katsiki too.

Which side of Lefkada is the best?

The west coast is home to long stretches of sandy beach running below some impressive cliffs, while the east coast has more sheltered bays and coves. So, in short, it’s all about what you want for your vacation, as both coasts are some of the most beautiful places in Greece for their own reasons.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Lefkada

Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Lefkada.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

Final Thoughts on Where To Stay in Lefkada?

There you have it, then! Lefkada is the perfect getaway for tourists hoping to avoid the main tourist hotspots in Greece! The beautiful beaches along the coast let you experience the Mediterranean without the noise. It’s also a real hidden gem when it comes to Greek cuisine and cosy tavernas.

This island paradise has something for everyone, whether your preference is for a quiet getaway amidst the splendour of nature in Agios Nikitas, a family-friendly paradise with a hint of hustle in Nidri, or history and cultural immersion in Lefkada Town.

If I had to pick my favourite place to stay, I’d probably go with Lefkada Town. It’s home to the best hotels in Lefkada and I think I left my heart down one of those cobbled streets when window shopping while I was there!

Allure Central Boutique Hotel is my most highly recommended hotel in Lefkada Town. It has the perfect location, being a stones throw away from all of the main bars and restaurants and has super cosy rooms for you to unwind in at the end of the day.

If you’ve gathered the troops for a Greek getaway, I definitely recommend Lefkada Serenity in Agios Nikkitas. This villa is huge in amenities, views and vibes. You really can’t go wrong here.

All that said, the best place for you really does depend on what you want to get out of your stay. Thankfully, Lefkada is a pretty small island, so you can easily visit all three of my recommended neighbourhoods if you’re staying for a week. Bringing a car? Make your way around the coast for the best experience!

So, pack your bags, choose your perfect neighbourhood, and prepare to experience the enchantment of Lefkada! This island paradise awaits, offering a spectacular Greek retreat that will have you planning your return as soon as you leave!
