Pai is a town cradled in the mountains of Northern Thailand. It lies in the Mae Hong Soon Province and is known for its hot springs, waterfalls, and peaceful hippie vibes.
It’s a small village, with the population coming in under 3,000 which only adds to its seclusion and charm.
Instead of a Thailand island getaway, why not do a Thailand mountain getaway instead? Even though there are no beaches, Pai is a slice of paradise.
Pai won’t disappoint the adventurers, nature lovers, and yogis out there and generally anyone who wants to reap some of the benefits of meditating without actually having to meditate…. Peacefulness is omnipresent in Pai.
But what isn’t exactly peaceful is the stress and anticipation that comes along with trying to figure out where to stay in Pai. With so many hostels and hotels looking so perfect, it’s hard to know which Pai accommodation options are right for you.

Pai’s Neighborhood Guide – Places to Stay in Pai

North Pai is one of the best neighborhoods to stay in Pai, but you don’t even know it yet. Most people don’t realize that some of the most famous Pai accommodation spots are actually in North Pai!
Riverside Pai
As we’ve already mentioned Pai sits along the Pai River. Downtown Pai falls to the west of the river, but there are plenty of incredible Pai accommodation options on the other side of the river too.
Downtown Pai
Downtown Pai is centered around Chaisongkran Road but absolutely spreads out along other key roads like Rungsiyanon, Tesaban, and Raddamrong Roads. Don’t be intimidated by the sound of staying downtown.

South Pai sure knows how to take our breath away. Being farther away from the downtown hubbub, South Pai is picturesque and where true relaxation and rejuvenation occurs. We may be a little obsessed…
Pai Canyon Area
The Pai Canyon area is actually 8km South of Pai. To get there, you just take the Highway 1095 South about 8km. To reach the Pai Canyon itself, stay on the lookout for a parking lot that is right after the “Love Strawberry Pai” attraction that you can easily see on the left hand side of the road.
Pai is a small mountain village that is extremely picturesque. It remains relatively tranquil and doesn’t get quite as many visitors as other places on the Thailand backpacking trail. Getting to Pai can be quite the adventure in and of itself, as it lies in between Chang Mai and Mae Hong Soon and there are hundreds of winding mountainous sharp curves to expect along the drive.
We truly mean hundreds and hundreds of sharp curves! Along the 135km road from Chiang Mai, the serpentine road twists 762 times! For the faint of heart, and for the car sick, this is quite the challenge.
You might want to pack some anti-motion sickness pills for this ride, unless you’re hitting the road on motorbikes, in which case get ready for the ride of your life!
The wild ride is worth it as Pai is truly paradise. From the Pai Hot Springs to the waterfalls to the Night Market, Pai is packed with incredible things to do and to see. Hiking up to see the enormous white Buddha on the hillside is a must-do!
Pai dwells along the banks of the Pai River, so accommodation is usually centered downtown along Chaisongkran Road where the majority of shops and restaurants are.
However there is a scattering of hotels, guesthouses, and hostels spread along both sides of the riverbank and reaching further north and south into the Pai Valley. Ready to learn more about Pai’s best neighborhoods?

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQ about Finding a Place to Stay in Pai
Here’s what people usually ask us about the areas of Pai and where to stay.
What To Pack For Pai
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Pai
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!
