Before I visited Malta, I wouldn’t have been able to point out its capital, Valletta, on a map. While this might be due to personal ignorance, I’d also like to believe it’s because of the city’s low-key vibe, which makes it feel like a serious Easter egg among Europe’s bustling capital cities.
Choosing where to stay in Valletta is like picking from a collection of storybook neighbourhoods. There’s the UNESCO-listed historical centre with its Baroque apartments; then there are quieter corners where you can really soak in the Mediterranean atmosphere.
That said, this city is tiny – just 1.24 square miles in size. Unsurprisingly, this means that a lot of the neighbourhoods merge into one another, and others are hard to define entirely.

Comfortable, charming, and homey – these are the three words I would use to describe Casa Asti. It’s a small Inn in Upper Barrakka that feels a bit like you’re staying at a friend’s home – except right in the heart of Valletta’s lush garden neighbourhood.

Although this is one of the only hostels in the city centre, I would go so far as to say it doesn’t feel like a hostel at all. It’s set in a historic house built in 1721, with six stories of serviced accommodation ranging from private suites to four-bed dorms.

No exaggeration – I could live in this apartment. It’s sleek and stylish, with a minimalistic style and a clean interior.

Staying in the centre of Valletta, particularly on Merchants Street, has its pros and cons. It’s undoubtedly the centre of the city’s bustling core.
Upper Barrakka
The Upper Barrakka Gardens are a more tranquil, scenic neighbourhood with unbeatable views of the Grand Harbor. Some come here for the beautiful sunsets and views, others for the daily Saluting Battery Ceremony.
Valletta Waterfront
The Valletta Waterfront is a busy, new area built around some fascinating Baroque warehouses and boathouses. The promenade has historic buildings like the Pinto Stores and Forni Shopping Complex that date back to the 18th century, all refurbished to house stylish restaurants and accommodations.
Lower Barrakka
I know I said Upper Barrakka was tranquil, but its neighbour, Lower Barrakka, is undoubtedly the quietest, laid-back neighbourhood. This is a great place to stay in Valletta for couples, solo travellers, or anyone looking for a more down-to-earth ambience while still being close to the city’s action.
Floriana
Floriana is technically just outside of Valletta’s main gates, but in recent years, the city has expanded well beyond them. It’s a quiet, residential area that is great for everyone, from budget travellers to digital nomads and those looking for a more local, suburban experience.
Valletta might be small (tiny, actually), but it’s a city of distinctly unique neighbourhoods. While many of them merge into one another, and no neighbourhood is too far from the next, they each have their own character worth looking into when deciding where to stay in Valletta.
Starting in the Historical Center, you’ll find yourself on Merchants Street – a bustling hub of activity that probably looks similar to how it did back when it was founded in 1566. This UNESCO-listed neighbourhood is great for those who want to be in the heart of the city’s energy and don’t mind the crowds and camera flashes.
Just a walk away, Upper Barrakka Gardens is a more peaceful neighbourhood overlooking the Grand Harbour. It’s the place to be for views. On the other hand, the Valletta Waterfront has a much more cosmopolitan feel while still feeling totally relaxed and historic. The restaurants around here are set in restored Baroque warehouses and it’s often where many of the festivals in Malta take place.
And then there’s Lower Barrakka, a more tranquil option that is still just a short distance from the centre (because, let’s be honest, everything is). This neighbourhood is a lush haven with fewer crowds than the waterfront area and is one of my favourite places to stay in Malta when I visit.
Lastly, Floriana, just outside the main gates of Valletta, has a suburban, residential feel. It’s perfect for budget-conscious travellers who want easy access to the city. Plus, it’s home to its own lovely parks and plenty of historic sites.
Whatever you’re looking for, Valletta’s neighbourhoods offer something unique for every traveller.
Valletta’s Five Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in
Ok, next I am going to break down each area with some further info on what the vibe is, the best places to stay and finally rounding it off with some of the top things to do in each area.
1. Historical Center: Merchants Street / Republic Street – Best Place to Stay in Valletta for a First-Time Visit
Staying in the centre of Valletta, particularly on Merchants Street, has its pros and cons. It’s undoubtedly the centre of the city’s bustling core. The area is lively and exciting, with plenty to see and do for history buffs, shopping fans, and anyone interested in culture.
Locals and expats here enjoy the convenience of being near the St. John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grandmaster’s Palace, and countless museums. But then there is the foot traffic, the crowding, the noise. Like any city centre, I recommend this for your first visit, as long as you’re willing to fight your way through a crowd of tourists.
Casa Rocca Piccola B&B | Most Beautiful Bed and Breakfast in The Historical Center
Staying at Casa Rocca Piccola feels a bit like spending a night in a royal palace – 500 years ago. It’s hard to beat a place like this, with beautiful rooms, incredible food, and friendly staff to help with your every need.
Each suite is uniquely decorated, with bold colours, bespoke furnishings, and decorative details that could belong in the antique wing of a national museum. As the cherry on top, this B&B has a disability-accessible room. Five stars for inclusivity, am I right?!

If I had to pick one outstanding feature of The Gomerino Hotel, it would be the views. Set on a raised hill in the historic Valletta neighbourhood overlooking the port and Grand Harbor, I recommend spending as many sunrises and sunsets as possible on this rooftop terrace.
The hotel itself is modern and stylish. Fully deserving of its four stars, everything is neat as a pin here.

Surprisingly, Mandera is one of the few hostels in the city. It’s located in a home that was originally built in 1721 yet has recently been remodelled with modern interiors. The hostel includes private suites and dorms, all super well-fitted and, most importantly, an affordable place in Malta.
It feels a bit more elegant than your average hostel. Plus, this place to stay in Valletta has a small co-working space, perfect for budget-conscious digital nomads.
Mid-Century Modern Studio with Rooftop Deck | Most Beautiful Studio in The Historical Center
It’s all in the details of this mid-century studio. Rough exposed concrete walls, wooden and warm leather furniture, geometric patterns, and bold black-and-white art make this one of the most photogenic living rooms in the city.

If you’re looking for a trendy place to stay in Valletta, this spacious loft reminds me a bit of a bachelor pad from a high-budget film – but in the best way possible. It’s stylish and neat, with mismatched furniture and touches of black leather and wood across the home.
My favourite part has to be the deep walls and window frames and super-high beam ceilings. It also has a traditional Maltese timber balcony.

The Phoenicia Malta is Valletta’s answer to The Ritz. It’s glamorous, opulent, and palatial, with every amenity and service in the book. It’s located on the doorstep of Valletta in the lush garden neighbourhood of Floriana, on seven acres of private gardens.
Spa? Check. Gym, indoor and outdoor pools? Check. An iconic lounge, bar, and two restaurants? Check, check, check.

I’d go so far as to say that I could live in this townhouse suite. It’s overflowing with natural light and airflow, has a rooftop deck with panoramic city views, and an extra balcony for good measure.
The only issue with living here would be that it has a small kitchenette and only basic cooking equipment. But this shouldn’t be a problem if you’re visiting on a week-long vacation!

One of the most affordable apartments in Floriana also happens to be one of the most historic. This home dates back to 1572 – yup, it’s that old. And with this, they warn that it tends to be slightly humid inside. But don’t worry, they have dehumidifiers working around the clock for your comfort.

From the moment I arrived in Valletta, I was enchanced by the city’s rich history, warm Mediterranean climate, and stunning architecture.
