It still holds all the traditions and history of the past yet has become one of the most trendy cities in the Balkans.
While the country may be small, the capital city has so many little neighbourhoods that deciding where to stay in Tirana isn’t as straightforward as it may seem.
My first time visiting I was on the tiniest budget and ended up staying in the university area and didn’t realise it was a 25-minute walk to the city centre. So I’m here to teach you from my mistakes!
Whether you want a cool ass hostel in the centre to vibe with other travellers, or a trendy flat in the fast-paced Blloku neighbourhood, this guide will help you figure out the best place to stay in Tirana for you!

Alright, so you’ve decided on visiting Tirana, well you’re in for a wild old time in the best sense of the word. It really is one of the most interesting and authentic cities left in Europe. So I want you to make the most of it, so let’s get cracking! It’s a must-visit on any Balkan backpacking trip.

21 Djetori
Usually, the budget area of a city is a bit dodgy and way out on the outskirts of town, but not 21 Djetori. This area is a backpacker and budget traveler paradise with loads of hostels and affordable Airbnbs in an excellent location.
Blloku
The Blloku neighbourhood is one of the most epic places to stay in Tirana! It used to be where the communist elite lived and has now been reinvented into the most lively part of town.
Komuna e Parisit
Komuna e Parisit is located just a little outside of town near the Grand Park, this neighbourhood is perfect for families looking for a quieter stay with easy access to the city.
My expectations for Tirana were literally on the floor when I arrived. I knew very little about the capital of Albania except that it was under a dictatorship until around the 90’s. I had planned to get in and immediately head on a road trip to the Alps. Uff, I was SO WRONG, and thank god for that!
Tirana totally took me by surprise! With drastic changes from neighbourhood to neighbourhood, Tirana is a mix of old Balkan city meets modern metropolis. I wasn’t expecting to see the colourful buildings, or greenery and outdoor cafes everywhere. Plus, it’s one of the cheapest places in Europe to travel to.
You can spend your days learning about the intense history at the bunk-art museums, climb the Dajti Mountain on a cable car and still have time to sit at one of the many cafes in Skanderbeg Square. (Beers are like 2 euros, and they come with free snacks, so I am sold).
If it’s your first time in Tirana, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better spot than Tregu Cam. It’s located in the heart of the city, with easy access to transportation, restaurants, and sightseeing. The area is full of history and charm, with traditional markets just a few steps away.
If you’re like I was and on the thinnest of budgets, the neighbourhood of 21 Dejetori is a great option. It’s just a short walk from the city centre and offers affordable accommodation options, including hostels and budget hotels.
Families will absolutely love the green parks surrounding Komuna e Parisit, a residential neighbourhood just outside of the city centre. It’s quiet and safe, with plenty of playgrounds and green spaces for kids to run around in.
And then my absolute favourite area when I’m feeling a bit fancier: Blloku. A former communist neighbourhood turned trendy hotspot. Blloku is the place to be for nightlife and dining. You’ll find some cool hostels as well as chic flats and hotels here too.
Also, don’t worry, Tirana is one of the safest cities in Europe.

With that brief overview, I’m sure you already have somewhere in mind to stay “Cough Blloku Cough”. But if not, this full breakdown will give you a little more insight into the different areas as well as the best hotels, hostels, unique accommodations, and activities in each spot.
1. Tregu Cam – Where to Stay in Tirana for Your First Time
If you like to be in the thick of all the action then Tregu Cam is the best place to stay! First-timers in Tirana will love how close it is to everything. Whether you turn left or right out of your hotel, you’ll be met with beautiful streets full of colourful buildings and local markets!
Right in the centre of the city, Tregu Cam is where you’ll spend most of your time exploring the main landmarks, museums, and historical sites so it just makes sense to make it your home base! And because of the convenient location, everywhere is walkable so you won’t have to worry about navigating public transportation.
Suite Dolce Vita | Best Hotel in Tregu Cam
This modern suite in Tregu Cam is an excellent choice for first-timers in Tirana who want the comforts of home with the convenience of a central location. The cosiest hostel in all of Albania! Red Goat Hostel is a sweet escape from the concrete jungle of Tirana. 3. Blloku – Best Area to Stay in Tirana For Nightlife
The Blloku neighbourhood is one of the most epic places to stay in Tirana! It used to be where the communist elite lived and has now been reinvented into the most lively part of town. Overflowing with trendy cafes, and lines of bars and clubs, this is the perfect spot for night owls. It’s a little more expensive than some of the other neighborhoods but I think it’s worth it!
It’s also super close to the centre of Tirana, and during the day, Blloku has a cool hipster vibe with street art, boutique shops, and delicious restaurants to explore. The famous Tirana Pyramid, a former communist monument, is also located in this neighbourhood. I recommend climbing it at sunset for an epic view.
