With swaying palm trees, STUNNING beaches and glistening turquoise waters – it’s clear why Tenerife is such a highly sought-after holiday destination (especially for Brits).
Throw in mouth-watering food, epic hiking and wild nightlife and it’s got everything you could ask for from a holiday hotspot. Whether you want to party from dusk until dawn, hike high up in the hills, or lounge on the beach, Tenerife has something for everyone.
Many know of the beautiful beaches the island has to offer. However, if you can draw yourself away from the sand (I know… it’s easier said than done), you can head inland to soak in the beauty of the mountains.
Deciding where to stay in Tenerife is important as you’ll want to choose the area with activities best suited to you. Tenerife is a large island – the biggest in the Canary Islands, in fact – and the decision on where to stay isn’t an easy one.
But don’t worry bout’ a thang, I’ve taken one for the team and explored the whole island – I know, tough job. I’ve compiled the top six areas and what they have to offer to help you decide where to stay in Tenerife.
Without further ado, sit back and relax while I run you through everything I know.

#6 Puerto de la Cruz – Where to Stay in Tenerife for Luxury-Lovers
Puerto de la Cruz is an area in the north of Tenerife that very much caters to all you high-rollers. It’s packed with gorgeous, luxury resorts that line the beaches. You’ll be at a loss for which one to choose! (Don’t worry I’ve listed my top picks below)
Puerto de la Cruz has grown from a small fishing village to the busiest tourist spot on Tenerife’s north coast. The area has been subject to a fair chunk of mass tourism, however, most of the tourism has ended up moving down to the southern areas of Tenerife. This has left the area in limbo with a cool mix of old and new to discover.
However, it’s not just the luxury resorts that draw people to Puerto de la Cruz. In contrast to the south coast, the north has a warm and mostly humid climate that allows rich, lush vegetation to grow. You’ll find plenty of greenery, vineyards and banana plantations nearby.
Puerto de la Cruz is also home to Tenerife’s famous black sand beaches and beautiful botanical gardens. So, if you decide to head out from your boujee beachside resort, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in the area.
Hotel Botanico y Oriental Spa Garden | Best Luxury Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz
Looking to splash some cash at a fancy resort in Puerto da la Cruz? This is where you should be splashing it. With three outdoor pools, accommodation set in beautiful gardens overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Mount Teide and UNLIMITED spa access included. This place is God damn dreamy!
There are loads of rooms available – so whether you’re a solo traveller, a couple or a family, there will be a room at this outrageously stunning resort for you.
Puerto Nest Hostel | Best Hostel in Puerto de la Cruz
Located in an area in Puerto de la Cruz known as “Punta Brava”, this hostel is just a few steps from the beach. The hostel has a relaxing, comfy vibe with its garden and terrace which are great common areas to meet other travellers. It’s full of natural light and has incredible views.
The hostel is super welcoming to everyone, from young people to families or couples. If you’re hoping to explore the famous Loro Parque or just chill out in the beautiful, black sand Playa Jardin – you’re a stone’s throw from both.
Modern, Bright Villa with Pool and Tropical Garden | Best Airbnb in Puerto de la Cruz
Not only is the area home to luxury resorts but it’s also chocker with beautiful, modern homes to rent. As per the luxury theme of Puerto de la Cruz, this Airbnb is nothing less than exquisite. With a private pool, garden and beautiful modern decor – it’s luxurious but designed in a way that makes you feel at home.
The Airbnb is in a great spot, close to the city centre and beaches. There is private parking on-site so if you’re renting a car in Spain, not having to worry about parking is very handy.

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQs About Finding a Place to Stay in Tenerife
Here’s what people usually ask me about the areas of Tenerife and where to stay.
What To Pack For Tenerife
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

Is Tenerife an overrated holiday destination?
Tenerife is well known for its large resorts and many British tourists – although that means some areas of the island are suuuuper touristy. It doesn’t mean you can’t find little local nooks around the place. I’d recommend checking out the mountain villages or smaller beach towns such as El Medano.
What is the best luxury hotel in Tenerife?
H10 Gran Tinerfe is my top pick for a luxury hotel in Tenerife. It’s got everything you’d dream of and more. From stunning sea views, the ultimate location, tennis courts and an on-site restaurant and bar. If there weren’t so many places to explore around you, you could easily spend your entire holiday in the hotel! It’s another one of the best places in Tenerife for couples.
Where is the best place to stay in Tenerife for hiking?
San Cristobal de La Laguna is the place for adventure bunnies looking to explore the natural side of the island. Loads of hiking and trekking trails nearby will take you deep into Tenerife’s Parque Rural de Anaga.
Where is the best place to stay to be close to the beaches in Tenerife?
Playa de las Americas is a beach bums paradise. Home to Playa de las Américas: Playa de Troya, Playa del Camisón, or Playa de las Vistas. It’s also just a stone’s throw away from Los Cristianos and its gorgeous beach as well.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Tenerife
Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Tenerife.
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Tenerife
There is no better place than Tenerife for an amazing holiday paradise. Boasting perfect temperatures all year around it’s the perfect European getaway (yes, even in Winter!)
From the beautiful beaches, epic mountains and wild nightlife – no matter your interests or budget, Tenerife is a holiday destination that can be enjoyed by everyone.
As you have discovered, there are multiple areas to stay across Tenerife. All are INCREDIBLE but each offers something unique. So I hope you figured out which area is best for you based on my guide.
If you’re still not sure where to stay in Tenerife, I’d recommend booking at the best hotel on the island: H10 Gran Tinerfe. With sea views and an ideal location in Playa de las Americas, you can’t go wrong with this one.
However, if you’re on a bit more of a budget, you’ve got to book in at my favourite hostel on the island: Patio Hostel. It’s in an epic building, in a great location and breakfast is included. It’s a big yes from me.
Tenerife is a bangin’ spot for a holiday. I hope you have the best time ever wherever you choose to stay on the island.
