Yo yo! Welcome to your next favourite vacay destinay! I am beyond buzzin’ to whisk you away on an adventure to the vibrant streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico, one of my all-time favourite places to hang out.
From wandering through the cobbled streets of Old San Juan to relaxing on the pristine beaches or getting lost in the rhythmic beat of salsa. Here you’ll find me sippin’ piña coladas, dippin’ in the ocean and trippin’ over the endless amount of things to do.
But it’s not just the sights and sounds that make San Juan so enchanting – it’s the flavors too. Follow the sizzle of alcapurrias and indulge in a fresh Coquito… or two or three!

This city has it all in spades. however, San Juan is a relatively large city so figuring out where to stay can be overwhelming. But never fear! Hide Yo’ Money!FAQs About Finding a Place to Stay in San Juan
Here’s what people usually ask me about the areas of San Juan and where to stay.
What To Pack For San Juan
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

Where not to go in San Juan?
San Juan is a super safe place to visit so there are no “no-go” areas. However, I do recommend heading to beaches outside of the city if you want a more relaxing and less crowded experience.
How many days in San Juan is enough?
Three to four days is enough to see all the things to do, however, it’s a great place for a proper vacation, so you can easily spend a couple of weeks here relaxing by the sea whilst taking a few days out here and there for sightseeing.
Is it expensive in San Juan?
San Juan is somewhere down the middle, it’s affordable for the Caribbean but it’s not super cheap either. Thankfully, there is a good variety of accommodation options for all budgets.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for San Juan, Puerto Rico
When travelling overseas it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of visiting somewhere new. But always make sure you have decent travel insurance before setting off. That way you can enjoy your trip without worry.
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
