Savai’i, Samoa’s largest island, offers a much more relaxing and tranquil experience compared with Upolu. It’s home to some exquisite unspoiled landscapes – from volcanic lava fields to tropical jungles to pristine beaches.
South Upolu
South Upolu is known for its gorgeous beaches and laid-back atmosphere. Technically, it’s just a short distance from the buzzing city of Apia, but it couldn’t feel more removed from the capital.
From the interesting museums around Apia to the tranquil coastline of Savai’i, there are plenty of different types of places to stay on these two small islands. If time is on your hands, I would suggest splitting your time between both islands.
Savai’i is the larger island of the two, but also the less populated and, ultimately, much quieter option. This island is famous for its volcanic landscapes around Mount Silisili and its traditional culture, while Upolu, home to the capital of Apia, is much more developed. Although smaller, there are plenty more places to stay in Upolu, and the tourism sector is more developed here. Meaning, it’s more accessible.
Apia is the busiest city in the country. And even as that, it’s hardly busy compared to other capital cities. It’s the heart of Samoan culture and the island’s commerce industry. It’s a great place to stay in Samoa for travellers looking for a mix of modern amenities and authentic culture.
It’s also where all the ferries and boats are based, which means it’s a great jumping-off point from which to explore the little surrounding islands.

Savai’i is a 90-minute ferry ride from Upolu and feels much more tranquil and unspoiled than some parts of Upolu. This island is characterized by volcanic mountains and lava fields, a lush inner rainforest, and stunning beaches. Accommodations seem more rustic around here. They’re often family-run and offer a glimpse into local life. If you enjoy travelling off the beaten track a little more, this one is perfect for you.
South Upolu is seriously blessed with natural beauty. Its rugged coastline is dotted with beaches, local villages, and cliffs. There are a few luxury resorts here, as well as low-key homestays for those on a budget. Since it’s accessible by car from the capital, it’s a great place for those looking for a peaceful getaway while still being close to the action.

I’ve made sure this tops the list of accommodations purely because I rate it as my personal favourite property. It’s a small eco-house in a lush garden in Apia, with two bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen.
Every moment inside this home feels like you’re connected to nature, from the rustic wooden interiors to the high ceilings and glass windows that bring the outdoors in. It’s also a pretty unique place, located on a property with a local gallery—hence its name, the ‘Art Center Tiny House.’

Accommodations around here are few and far between. You’ll find the best places are locally owned and usually family-run. The local population emphasizes maintaining the traditional lifestyle here, making it a wonderful place to visit for an authentic Samoan experience. If you’re travelling on a budget, this is a great option for you.
Savaii Lagoon Resort | Luxury Hotel in Savai’i Island
The Savaii Lagoon Resort is one of the few modern accommodations on this otherwise remote island. It’s located right on the beach, with just about every room boasting a sea view.
It’s one of those resorts that has a little something for everyone, making it possible to spend a full week here without leaving the property. Self-catering facilities – check. Babysitting services – check. Restaurant with a bar and breakfast – check.

Le Lagoto Resort & Spa is undoubtedly the most luxurious place to stay on Samoa’s Savai’i island. Its spacious rooms are built using traditional island methods and local materials. High ceilings, dark wood, and cool tiled floors are the vibe here.
And when you aren’t in your gorgeous room, I’d recommend lounging on the private beach or the swimming pool overlooking it. This place is heaven – it’s as simple as that.
Studio Apartment with Garden | Affordable Studio in Savai’i Island
If you’re interested in living the simple island life near the beach in Savai’i, this little studio apartment is all you will need. It has a basic kitchenette and space for three guests to sleep comfortably.
The interiors are simple, but with a rolling lawn outside that leads right to the beach, you’ll probably spend most of your time outside anyway.

South Upolu is home to some lavish spots, but this might just be the most exquisite. It’s a four-star property so beautifully designed and decorated that you would expect to find it gracing the pages of a Conde Nast magazine. Coconuts Beach Club Resort and Spa is another luxury hotel, but it has a much more low-key feel. Everything, from the architecture to the garden landscaping, is locally made and designed.
The hardest decision you’ll make will be whether to stay in a treehouse suite, a beachfront bungalow, or an overwater villa – tough choice. Also, it’s one of the only hotels that has overwater villas (you know, the ones the Maldives are famous for).
Saletoga Sands Resort & Spa | Family Friendly Resort in South Upolu
If you’re wondering where to stay in Samoa with kids, Saletoga Sands Resort and Spa is the place to be. It’s a classic family-friendly institution where luxurious amenities exist alongside kid-friendly ones – waterslides, pools with floaties, snorkelling equipment, and a buffet the kids will love. This one is ideal for travelling families.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Samoa
Like most places, figuring out where to stay in Samoa is often the most important part of the planning process. Apia, the nation’s capital, is known for its museums, lively food scene, and abundant accommodations.
Savai’i is more quiet, with only a few remote places to stay. South Upolu, just a short drive from Apia, is lined with resorts and hotels and is the best place to visit with families. If I had to pick just two of my favourite places to stay in Samoa, they would have to be the Aga Reef Resort and Spa in South Upolu and the Tiapapata Art Centre Tiny House in Apia.
Accommodations here are unique by nature. They’re usually pretty rustic and remote, many owned by local families, offering a touch of Samoan authenticity to your stay.
