Playa del Carmen is an epic destination that offers so much more than sun, beautiful beaches, drinks and palm trees.
There are beach clubs, epic casas with jacuzzi’s, championship golf, and fantastic dining. You can spend your time here at the Riviera Maya, sipping margs or getting your kicks at theme parks like Xplor!
But with so many hotels, hostels and apartments to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to stay. Which is exactly why I prepared this guide on the best places to stay in Playa del Carmen. I’ve got an all inclusive resort, homes with private terraces, pads within walking distance to white sand beaches, aaaaand of course, swimming pool palaces.
Ok so maybe no palaces exactly but I’ve got several beach clubs where you’ll be treated like royalty. Make sure you look at the things to do I’ve curated in each neighbourhood to make the most of your stay in Playa del Carmen.

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQ about Finding a Place to Stay in Playa del Carmen
Here’s what people usually ask me about the areas of Playa del Carmen and where to stay.
What To Pack For Playa del Carmen
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

What are the theme parks in Playa del Carmen?
Xplor Theme Park is the one! Near Cancun Airport, you can take part in adrenaline-fueled activities like zip-lining, rafting, cave swimming, and driving through the jungle and caves. You can also enjoy a buffet lunch with unlimited drinks in the heart of the jungle and live out your wildest Riviera Maya dreams.
What’s so special about the Riviera Maya?
The Riviera Maya is such a stunning stretch of white sand beach coastline. Located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, the waters are crystal clear and calm. Perfect for families with children and ravers who shouldn’t be out in the wild waves of the West Coast.
Where to stay in Playa del Carmen with kids?
To make things easier, I recommend an all inclusive resort. This being said, what’s the point of travelling if you’re not going to experience the local culture and walk the streets getting the shits from tasty street vendors? Scrap that, you’ll already have your hands full, book in at The Reef Coco Beach (Optional All Inclusive Resort) and enjoy!
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Playa del Carmen
There’s enough to worry about (like where your next margarita is coming from) on holiday. Make sure you get good travel insurance before your trip.
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
