Pirate Backpackers | Best Hostel In Montenegro

Kotor’s history and scenery go together like strawberries and cream. It perfectly combines stunning landscapes, picturesque beaches, and historic attractions. The Old Town’s medieval walls, narrow alleyways, and ancient churches will make you feel like you’ve travelled through time.
Podgorica
Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro and, as such, the largest city in the country. It’s located just north of Lake Skadar (which, if I had more time, I would include as the best location in Montenegro for nature lovers)
Budva
Budva is Montenegro’s equivalent of Santorini. It’s a coastal hotspot with gorgeous beaches and an exciting nightlife scene to match. It has that classic Med feel, where you can soak up the sun by day and party under the moon by night.
Ulcinj
Ulcinj feels like a totally different world compared with the rest of the country. It has a much stronger Ottoman influence with a unique Albanian character. Think old mosques and fortresses and a rich history of piracy.
Not long ago, Montenegro was part of Yugoslavia where it served as a strategic naval base. Today, the newly independent coastal nation is emerging as a strong contender to glamorous vacation destinations like Capri and Mykonos.
Not only is it absolutely exquisite, packed with history and culture, and blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate, but a holiday here could cost half what a trip in the Med would. It’s one of the cheapest countries to visit in Europe if you’re looking for a proper vacay.
The country might have a winning hand, but it’s worthwhile figuring out where to stay in Montenegro before hopping on a plane.
Kotor Bay is easily Montenegro’s most sophisticated and glitzy area, home to the most luxurious hotels and the country’s only superyacht marina. Staying in Kotor, with its medieval UNESCO-listed Old Town, is means experiencing a gorgeous fjord-like coastline that gives Scandinavia a run for its money.
Budva is a busy town along the Budva Riviera. It’s best known for its lively nightlife scene and the young crowd that comes for it. You can feel the town come alive with energy as the sun sets, with plenty of beach bars, pubs, and clubs. To make things better, the town is easily walkable and has its fair share of gorgeous beaches.
Ulcinj is a historic town with a long stretch of beach that offers something a little different from the others. Compared with Kotor and Budva, this area has a uniquely Ottoman and Albanian influence as well as bustling markets and super friendly locals. This town is great for budget travellers and offers a bit more of an off-the-beaten-track experience. However, with one of the longest beaches in the country, it’s also popular with families and couples visiting for vacations.
Podgorica doesn’t sit high on most Montenegro travel lists, which is one of the reasons I loved it so much. This capital city feels totally local and authentic, and there are never crowds of tourists. It is not quite as scenic as the other towns, but it gives a real sense of Montenegrin life.

It’s no easy task to figure out the absolute best places to stay in Montenegro, but I’ve done my best to serve up four epic areas for all types of travellers. (Not included in this list are coastal gems like Tivat and the lakeside paradise of Lake Skadar.)
1. Kotor and Kotor Bay – Best Area to Stay in Montenegro for a First-Time Visit
Kotor’s history and scenery go together like strawberries and cream. It perfectly combines stunning landscapes, picturesque beaches, and historic attractions. The Old Town’s medieval walls, narrow alleyways, and ancient churches will make you feel like you’ve travelled through time.
While the Old City is pretty busy, the beaches are a bit quieter than other beach towns. I think this gives the town a relaxed and romantic feel. Just be prepared for some daytime crowds when cruise ships roll into the harbour!

There are few things as cool as staying in a UNESCO-protected 13th-century palace in the heart of Old Town Kotor. And while the Buca Palace might not resemble the grand courtyards and high ceilings of Versailles, it sure does have all of the charm.

While not as geographically impressive as other places on this list, Podgorica is the heart of the country and has an authentically local feel. Dotted with a few historic Ottoman and Roman landmarks, it’s a fabulous spot to base yourself on to explore inland Montenegro, Lake Skadar, and even the nearby wine regions.
Plus, with fewer tourists to haggle with, you’ll get a real taste of Montenegran daily life.

Even as one of the most affordable places to stay in Montenegros’ capital city, Hotel Septembar is also one of the most luxurious. It’s a new building with spacious rooms and neat modern interiors.
