Lancaster constantly draws me back in with its historical charm. As someone who became obsessed with Bridgerton and Downton Abbey, this city had me ready to dress up in my finest attire and sip tea with the queen.

Waking up in a historical home in the city, grabbing my morning tea from Cafe Dolce, and walking down the cobblestone streets became my favorite way to start the day in Lancaster.

But none of that would have been possible if I didn’t know where to stay, and since I want you to have the perfect stay as well, I’ve written this guide to help you find the BEST place to have an epic weekend in Lancaster.

From budget stays to holiday homes and luxurious hotels, Lancaster has an array of options to suit any traveler’s preference. So, let’s explore the top places to stay in this charming city.

FOR FAMILIES

FOR FAMILIES

City Center

Lancaster has such a hometown vibe and ample options for outdoor adventures and cultural experiences, making it an excellent option for families. You won’t find cars whizzing by or busy streets here. Instead, you’ll find plenty of peaceful green spaces.

Lancaster is one of the most culturally rich cities in England, with a history dating back to the Roman era. While so many cities these days seem to want new and shiny, Lancaster is full of character and charm. Its old cobbled streets, adorned with local shops and cafes and surrounded by stunning architecture, make it the perfect place to explore on foot.

It’s located in the northwest of England, situated on the River Lune. Its location makes it ideal for exploring the Lake District, which is only a short drive away. Lancaster’s small-knit community and old English charm will give you something you wouldn’t find if you stayed in London or Manchester.

If it’s your first time in Lancaster, then there is no doubt that the best place for you to stay is in Lancaster City Center. This neighborhood is where everything happens and it’s the perfect base for exploring all the city has to offer.

From here, you can easily walk to all of Lancaster’s major attractions, such as the Lancaster Castle, Ashton Memorial, and The Dukes Cinema. I also recommend the city centre for families that are visiting Lancaster.

The neighbourhood is safe, and there are plenty of activities to keep the little ones entertained. Head over to Williamson Park for a fun day out with the family or take a stroll on the picturesque banks of River Lune. In the summer, the park has an open-air theatre and plenty of events for kids.

For those travelling on a budget, one of my favourite places to stay is in Morecambe, just a short train ride away from Lancaster. (Literally only 8 minutes!) It’s a charming coastal spot and provides a good alternative to staying in the busy city centre.

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
