Nestled among the trees by Glen Lake, this secluded paradise is perfect for a family getaway to Lake George! There’s a small dock at the end, so if you’re bringing a boat with you it’s a great casting-off point for fishing trips.
Six Flags is only a short drive away, so you’ll easily be able to keep the kids entertained on their more energetic days.
Lake George
Nestled at the southern edge of the lake itself, Lake George is your main gateway to the region. First-time visitors will appreciate the tourism offices, excursion providers, and clearly marked hikes surrounding the town.
Bolton Landing
About halfway up the western banks of Lake George, Bolton Landing is a laid-back region with far fewer tourists than those in the main town. For this reason, accommodation and restaurants tend to be cheaper here.
Glen Lake
About fifteen minutes south of Lake George, Glen Lake is a smaller and more peaceful alternative. For families visiting the area, you’ll benefit not just from this chilled out atmosphere, but also the nearby theme parks.
Ticonderoga
Up on the northern tip of Lake George, Ticonderoga seems like an entirely different world! Perched on a plateau above Lake George, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views right down the length of the lake.
Lake George’s Four Best Neighborhoods to Stay in
Gorgeous Lake George is a worthy contender for your next US travel experience. The lake itself is very beautiful, and the nearby mountains and forests make excellent hiking spots.
This vast area of natural beauty has stunning scenery, delectable restaurants in every town, and a huge selection of adventure activities throughout the year. This makes it an excellent staycation destination in the Northeast.
The town of Lake George itself is a great starting point, and where you will find the tourism center. Lake Groegr Village is my top pick for first-time visitors. You’ll be able to get a sense of everything on offer, and it’s the best-connected base in the region. You can also benefit from the local tourism companies if you prefer a guided excursion.
Just south of Lake George is Glen Lake. This is sometimes considered part of the same town, but it has a more laid-back vibe. The Six Flags resort is near Glen Lake, making this an immensely popular destination with families. It’s also a good spot for fishing if you’re more of a beginner and feel intimidated by the larger Lake George.
Heading along Lake George to the north, you will find Bolton Landing stretched along the western bank. Lake George is in upstate New York, it can get pretty expensive – but it isn’t as touristy in Bolton so prices are a bit more palatable. You’ll also get to enjoy a more local atmosphere, with the same stunning scenery as everywhere else along the lake.
Finally, you’ll find Ticonderoga at the northern tip of Lake George. This destination is unique, and it’s where you’ll find some fascinating historic attractions. The town maintains connections with its Native American past, making it a more culturally intriguing destination. It’s also super close to Vermont if you’re planning further travel.

1. Lake George – Where to Stay in Lake George for Your First Time
Nestled at the southern edge of the lake itself, Lake George Village is one of the best places to stay in the Adirondacks. First-time visitors will appreciate the tourism offices, excursion providers, and clearly marked hikes surrounding the town. Whether you’re visiting in summer or winter, it is well connected to all the main sports locations.
If you’re not traveling with a car, Lake George is really your only option as this is where all of the tour guides are based. If you’ve brought your own transport, it’s still a good base as all the other locations are well-signposted from Lake George.

Soak up Lake George in style with this rustic four-star hotel just outside the main town! Within the hotel, you will find a vast fitness center, outdoor swimming pool, and indoor water sports. Rooms are spacious and decorated in the traditional style of the region.

Fort William Henry Hotel | Another Great Hotel in Lake George
Fort William Henry is the place to be. Whether you’re here in the winter months or for a summer vacation at Lake George, this hotel will satisfy you. The Grand Jacuzzi Suite even has a hot tub in the bedroom… Spicy!
House of Frankenstein Wax Museum is an epic tourist attraction while you’re in the area and is within walking distance of the Fort William Henry Hotel.
East Cove | Best Airbnb in Lake George
Visiting for the winter sports attractions? This charming little cabin is only a short drive from the main slopes.
East Cove is a peaceful neighborhood in Lake George, with a more secluded feel than the town center. Despite this, it also has some of the best restaurants on offer in the region. The cabin itself is quite basic but comes at a great price.
Chic Escape | Another Great Airbnb in Lake George
Looking for something a bit more modern? Look no further than this chic apartment right in the heart of the village.

About halfway up the western banks of Lake George, Bolton is a laid-back region with far fewer tourists than those in the main town. For this reason, accommodation and restaurants tend to be cheaper here. This doesn’t mean you won’t get the same gorgeous scenery. The sights here will often be completely unspoiled by crowds of visitors scrambling to get a photo.
Most of the homes in Bolton are private vacation homes so I’ve included a couple that are just 10 minutes drive away in Diamond Point. The local atmosphere in these accommodation areas means you’ll get an authentic insight into local life. If you do stay elsewhere, make sure you head up to Diamond Point and Bolton for a few hours to gain a new perspective on the region.
The Juliana Resort | Best Resort in Diamond Point
Sitting pretty, this resort in Diamond Point on the shores of Lake George, welcomes visitors on summer vacation to enjoy all the recreational activities. With a heated outdoor pool, a private beach, barbeque facilities, a children’s playground, and free-to-use kayaks – everyone will be entertained!
The lodging options are varied with suites, studios, or apartments to choose from, all with air conditioning and a fridge. The rooms are spacious, light, well appointed, and most of them have a kitchenette so you can cook up a storm! Or, enjoy the outdoor fire pit area, make some new friends, and head into town to enjoy one of the many restaurants.
Adirondack Diamond Point Lodge | Best Lodge in Diamond Point
Nestled into the woods, this accommodation has plenty of room and amenities (heated pool, barbeque, fire pits, and more!) to make your holiday super low admin. Situated on the trolley line, you don’t even have to drive! Take the trolley to the beach on Lake George, to the restaurants and shops, and experience the local life.
With rooms, cabins, and villas, there’s an accommodation option to suit your stay. If you’re staying in the winter months, you’ll appreciate the airconditioning and coffee machine in every room to fuel up for the day
Adirondack Dream | Best Airbnb in Bolton
This dreamy apartment isn’t just great for those on a budget, the cozy vibes make it the perfect choice for a winter escape. There is a log-burning stove in the lounge area, with enough supplies to last your entire stay provided on arrival. The small deck area has views across the lake, as well as a grill for eating al fresco.

3. Glen Lake – Best Neighborhood in Lake George for Families to Stay In

Parents might prefer to check out the vast retail destinations in the area – with some of the best malls in Upstate New York. The lake itself doesn’t have as many water sports providers as Lake George, but they’re much better for beginners thanks to the calm water.
Country Inn & Suites by Radisson | Cozy Hotel in Glen Lake
The only hotel within walking distance of Six Flags, this is easily our top pick for families heading to Lake George! It has an indoor and outdoor pool, so you can enjoy a quick dip in the pool year-round. Adults will also be happy with the Pyramids Aviation Mall, a major shopping destination in the Glen Lake region.
Lake Front Chalet | Best Airbnb in Glen Lake
Right by the lakeside, this cute little cabin is perfect for a peaceful break on Glen Lake! The location is perfect with shopping, restaurants, and the activities of Lake George within a short drive. This one-bedroom home will host up to four humans with plenty of outdoor space to hang out and four legged friends are welcome.
A dock space is available for a small runabout, fishing boat, or jet ski. Kayaks and canoes are also available from this Airbnb and it’s just one block from the Warren County walking and bike path.
Private Lake House | Best Cabin in Glen Lake
Another secluded gem, this quaint little lake house has its own private dock where you can keep your boat, kayaks, or other equipment. In the summer it is a great jumping-off point for a quick dip in Glen Lake. It’s far too cold for this in the winter, but you’re only a ten-minute drive from some epic ski slopes.

Up on the northern tip of Lake George, Ticonderoga seems like an entirely different world! Perched on a plateau above Lake George, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views right down the length of the lake. Turn around, and you’ll also get to enjoy similar views up the length of Lake Champlain!
This is where you get to discover some truly fascinating historical attractions. Ticonderoga is proud of its Native American heritage, so take the time to learn more about it while you’re here. It’s also right next to the border with Vermont, making it an excellent road trip stop.
Super 8 by Wyndham | Best Hotel in Ticonderoga
Surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains, this is a great way to enjoy the stunning scenery without breaking the bank. Super 8 by Wyndham is a popular chain for budget travelers across North America, and their Ticonderoga hotel has fantastic guest reviews.
The rooms are pretty basic but well-decorated and peaceful. A continental breakfast is also included in the room rate.
Ti Mill House | Best Airbnb in Ticonderoga
Officially listed within the National Register of Historic Places, this charming holiday home is a small slice of local heritage. It’s also within walking distance from the Star Trek Original Series Set Tour, making it a popular option with Trekkies and TV lovers. The interiors are carefully restored in a way that still respects the building’s history – creating an inviting and inspiring space.
Lake George Cabin | Best Cabin in Ticonderoga
This sweet secluded cabin is within walking distance of Lake George’s northern shores and Ticonderoga’s main street. There’s golf in the area and plenty of hiking trails, perfect for spending time together. This cabin has one bedroom and a pull out sofa bed if you need the extra space.

Lake George is a safe place to travel, so you can travel with peace of mind. The local people are lovely and it’s not too touristy.
Where to stay in Lake George in Winter?
My pick would be the Fort William Henry Hotel, they’ve got a hot tub and fireplace to relax and warm up during the winter months. Another great option would be America’s Best Value Inn – as the name suggests, great value with their “1 Queen suite”… You’ll get a hot tub bath and a fireplace in your suite and be able to snuggle up and stay warm.
What is there to do in Diamond Point?
Check out ADK Boat Tours! This company offers boating activities – cruising, tubing, cliff jumping, water skiing, wakeboarding, and surfing from The Flamingo Resort. Make sure you ask for the guest discount if you stay at The Flamingo Resort in Diamond Point and head out with ADK.

As safe and serene as I’m sure your stay in the Lake George area will be, remember to cover yo self with good travel insurance.

Final Thoughts on Where To Stay in Lake George
Lake George really does have something for everyone. If you’re here for a summer vacation, you can enjoy fishing, kayaking, and cycling. During the winter months, you can hit the ski slopes and enjoy the spa facilities available across the region.
If I had to pick my favorite overall Lake George area, I would have to go with Diamond Point, Bolton! Not only is it more affordable than other spots along the lake, but it also has a quirky atmosphere that is super infectious. You’ll get a more authentic insight into life in the region in Bolton than you will in the big tourism spots.
If you’re staying in Diamond Point, I recommend staying at Adirondack Diamond Point Lodge. This family-run accommodation will look after you well and give plenty of great inside info on the area.
That being said, it’s a pretty peaceful destination wherever you choose to stay. The best place for you really depends on what you want to get out of your trip. I hope this guide has helped you narrow down your options for your upcoming trip to Lake George.
