Guangzhou is the largest city in the Pearl Delta, in the south of China and is home to China’s most important port. Let me tell you, this city sees its fair share of boats!
For a long time, the city has been associated with unbreathable smog and sprawling urbanisation, but as things are starting to change, more tourists are flocking to the city and paying a visit during their trips to China.
Guangzhou is God’s gift to history enthusiasts, art fanatics and culture lovers… not to mention the food-obsessed (like me). This city holds a little piece of my heart as it blessed us with one of my favourite foods ever – dim sum!
Given the size of the city, figuring out where to stay in Guangzhou can be a daunting task if you’ve never been to the city before. The best place to stay depends on your budget and what you want to do while you’re in the city.
But never fear! That is exactly why I’ve put together this guide – to make your life a heck of a lot easier. I’ve compiled the best areas to stay in Guangzhou depending on your budget and style. You’ll also find the top places to stay and things to do in each (you’re welcome, friend!)

Around here, you can expect to find bars where beer flows freely, and a crowd that mixes locals, expats and tourists alike. Bars transmitting the local and international football games are particularly popular and can sometimes get rowdy when the stakes are high.
Popular clubs truly come to life on weekends and become so busy you could easily believe you are out in London or New York. However, many of the bars in the area are located in old houses, which gives them a special charm you will not find anywhere else.
During the day, the area is filled with little cafés where you can relax with a drink. Many upscale restaurants can also be found here.

Standing tall at almost 600 metres, it boasts a great observation deck from which you can get a bird’s eye view of the city down below. 5. Tianhe – Best Neighborhood in Guangzhou for Families
Tianhe is Guangzhou’s new city centre, filled with modern buildings and shopping centres. It is also the main business area of the city. As it is centrally located and provides easy access to all the main sights, Tianhe is a great neighborhood in Guangzhou for families.
Tianhe is particularly popular with shopping lovers, as the largest mall in Guangzhou, the Grandview Mall, is located here. Inside, you will mainly find large Western retailers and food chains, and, more surprisingly, an amusement park and an ice rink to keep the little ones entertained.
The new Guangdong Museum is also in Tianhe. Unlike the old museum, located in Yuexiu, the new museum focuses on the history and the culture of Guangzhou. Visiting it provides great insight on the city you are calling home for a few days and will teach you a lot! However, only 5 000 people can get in every day so it is recommended to arrive early in the morning to avoid disappointment.

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQ about Finding a Place to Stay in Guangzhou
Here’s what people usually ask us about the areas of Guangzhou and where to stay.
What To Pack For Guangzhou
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

Final Thoughts On Where to Stay in Guangzhou…

My favourite neighborhood in Guangzhou is Yuexiu. It is centrally located, easily accessible and offers a ton of options to stay entertained and learn more about the sprawling city of Guangzhou.
My favourite hotel in town is the Langham Place Guangzhou. If anything, the architecture of the building and the views over the Pearl river should be enough to convince you!
For backpackers, my top choice is the Dongshan Gaga Hostel. It has been fully refurbished and provides clean and comfortable beds in the heart of the city.
