In 192 AD, Da Nang was the center of the Hindu Champa Dynasty. Fast forward to today, and it’s Vietnam’s largest seaport.

While a lot has changed in 2000 years, the best places to stay in Da Nang still offer a glimpse into the rich history of this fascinating city.

After battling the hustle and bustle of Vietnam’s crowded cities like Hanoi, a stop in Da Nang is a must.

Beaches are Da Nang’s biggest draw, so take some time to kick back, relax on the sandy shores, and soak in the Southeast Asian sunshine. But don’t be fooled—there’s more to this place than just beach loungers and umbrellas.

Picking the right spot to crash in Da Nang might seem daunting, but it’s actually pretty straightforward. I’ve lived the digital nomad life here, and trust me, Da Nang can be a backpacker’s paradise.

Read on for a breakdown of the best districts and accommodations in Da Nang!

Son Tra Peninsula

Son Tra Peninsula, also known as Monkey Mountain, juts out into the South China Sea like an island. It’s home to some of the city’s most beautiful viewpoints, making it a hiker’s paradise.

The city is mainly local but is also pretty popular with expats. Local or expat Da Nang residents are some of the friendliest I have encountered whilst backpacking Vietnam. Top that off with city-wide free Wi-Fi, and we have a haven for digital nomads, too.

On arrival in this coastal heaven, you might be tempted to beeline for the beach. Don’t get me wrong, Da Nang’s beachfront is great, but there are SO many other areas worth checking out before committing to a simple beach holiday. And let’s not forget, the beaches come with a heavy dose of tourists.

Da Nang is a bustling city that sometimes gets overshadowed by its neighbor, Hoi An. In fact, tons of tourists who visit Hoi An stay in hotels in Da Nang to save costs. I know because I was once one of them. Years later, when I returned to live in the city, I realized there is more to Da Nang than meets the eye – I know that sounds poetically cliche, but it really rings true.

First things first – Da Nang is split into two sections by the Han River: the beach and the city. Typically, most tourists and expats live on the beach side, with the obvious appeal being, well, the beach. This beachside is then divided into two main districts: Ngu Hanh Son and Son Tra Peninsula.

The city side, on the other hand, is a lot bigger and home to more local Vietnamese populations. While some neighborhoods are dense, the city side gets more and more spread out the further you travel from the river. While it might not be on the beach, the city is bordered by lush tropical jungles, hills, and waterfalls. Do you see the allure?

No matter which side you choose to stay on, I always advise spending some time exploring both sides. Plus, Da Nang’s beach is in fact one of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam, even being so close to the city.

Da Nang’s Four Best Neighborhoods to Stay In

Choosing where to stay in Da Nang is a bit like choosing one meal at a Vietnamese food market. There are countless tempting options, and each offers a unique experience.

If the whole process seems a bit overwhelming, this simple list of Da Nang’s four most popular neighborhoods should help:

1. Ngu Hanh Son (Specifically around An Thuong and My An)  – Where to Stay in Da Nang for Your First Time

Ngu Hanh Son sits on the city’s beachside. It’s tucked between the sea and the river just below Son Tran Peninsula and is undoubtedly the most popular place for tourists and expats alike, and one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam. The Western influence is evident, yet not bad enough to spoil the authenticity of this seaside neighborhood.

Beach chairs and umbrellas line the seashore at My Khe Beach, Da Nang.
Beach day anyone?

I love Ngu Hanh Son because it is close to the beach, has world-class restaurants, and is just a short drive across the river from the city center. There is plenty to do in this area of town and lots of other travelers, so this is undoubtedly the perfect place to kick off your solo travels in Vietnam.

Danang Marriott Resort & Spa, Non Nuoc Beach Villas | Best Luxury Resort in Ngu Hanh Son

Danang Marriott Resort & Spa, Non Nuoc Beach Villas Da Nang Vietnam

The Danang Marriott isn’t like other fancy beach resorts. It’s even MORE luxurious. With only private villas on offer, the hotel feels more like a family holiday home, just with all the luxuries and amenities of a fully inclusive resort.

And not to mention, it’s right on Non-Nuoc Beach.

Rom Casa Hostel Da Nang | Best Hostel in Ngu Hanh Son

Rom Casa Hostel Da Nang Vietnam

A friendly atmosphere, tons of parties, and new friends – this is what you can expect from a stay at the Rom Casa Hostel in Da Nang.

This hip spot is designed with colorful containers piled on top of one another as rooms, all surrounding a central courtyard area where the vibes are always immaculate.

Sea View Apartment | Best Self-Catering Apartment in Ngu Hanh Son

Sea View Apartment Da Nang Vietnam

In a sensually overloaded country like Vietnam, I’m a big fan of a bit of privacy… Who am I kidding? I always like my own space. This gorgeous one-bedroom apartment is a top place to stay in Da Nang not only because it has a private bedroom, living room, and spacious kitchen but also for its stunning views of the beach.

2. Hai Chau District in CitySide – Best Place to Stay in Da Nang on a Budget

Hai Chau is one of the most local neighborhoods in Da Nang. It’s the center of trade and commerce and the most economically developed part of the city, where markets buzz, skyscrapers tower over the streets, and the faint smell of Vietnamese coffee wafts through the air.

A Riverfront view of the cityscape in Da Nang, Vietnam.
Vietnam’s answer to Singapore!

It’s one of the more affordable parts of the city. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t opulent apartments and hotels around, too. If you are thinking about staying in Da Nang long term, Hai Chau would be the place to do it; check out this post on the cost of living in Vietnam.

Lamanga Hotel and Suites | Best Hotel in Hai Chau District

Lamanga Hotel & Suites Da Nang Vietnam

With a rooftop deck and pool overlooking the city center, this is one of those places that can make you feel a thousand miles from the city, even from the very heart of it.

The rooms put views at their forefront, boasting panoramic dragon bridge or city views depending on your suite.

The Blossom Resort Island | Best Resort in Hai Chau District

THE BLOSSOM RESORT ISLAND Da Nang Vietnam

The Blossom Resort Island is one of the best places to stay in Da Nang because it brings the island vibes of offshore Vietnam into the city center. In fact, it’s giving a bit of Bali and even Japan: Bali, because of the high vaulted ceilings and dark carved wood furniture. And Japan, because of the Onsen service.

All in all, the hotel is all-inclusive, with spa treatments, saunas and steam rooms, and exceptional dining options. Sign me RIGHT up.

Seahorse Tropical Da Nang Hostel | Best Hostel in Hai Chau District

Seahorse Tropical Da Nang Hostel Vietnam

Seahorse Tropical Da Nang Hostel is one of those spots that is so well located you can walk to just about every hotspot in Hai Chau.

But what sets it apart from other hostels is its rooftop pool and optional breakfast buffet. With amenities like these, it feels more like an upscale hotel than a hostel!

Four Bed Home with Rooftop Deck | Best Family Home in Hai Chau District

Four Bed Home with Rooftop Deck Da Nang Vietnam

Jokes aside, I could live in this four-bedroom home. It’s designed to a T, with impressive high ceilings, a modern kitchen, and gold-edged chandeliers and furniture. It’s layered over three stories with a rooftop deck at the top.

But what I love most about this house is its close proximity to Moi Market, the heart of Da Nang’s food scene, which is especially famous for its breakfast foods.

3. Khue My – Best Neighborhood in Da Nang For Families to Stay In

Just between Ngu Hanh Son and the Son Tra Peninsula is a small Da Nang neighborhood called Khue My. Technically, it’s part of Ngu Hanh Son, but it has such a distinct feel that it deserves its own section.

This neighborhood is bordered by the sea to its east and the river to its west. Because of this, there are plenty of green areas and walking trails. It’s a local neighborhood with its fair share of expats. I recommend it for families because it’s relatively quiet, close to the beach, and has plenty of green parks.

VernalHome Boutique Da Nang | Best Boutique Hotel in Khue My

The first thing you’ll notice on arrival at this boutique hotel is the gorgeous swimming pool. It reminds me of a Balinese villa, with bridges crossing overhead and hanging greenery draping into the pool area.

The next thing you’ll notice is the sheer space and simplicity of each room. Floor space is ample, ceilings are high, and the layout is so well designed that there is a dedicated space for everything.

Laurel Da Nang Apartment | Best Apartment in Khue My

By renting this apartment, you can enjoy the privacy of your own bedroom and kitchen for about the same price as a bed in a shared dorm. Not only do rooms start at an exceptionally good price, but it’s also a short walk to the beachfront or river.

When you aren’t relaxing in your private, air-conditioned studio, enjoy the sunshine on the rooftop pool deck.

Three-Bedroom Pool Villa | Best Family-Friendly Villa in Khue My

Three-Bedroom Pool Villa Da Nang Vietnam

If you’re looking for a place to unwind with your family, there is no better place to stay in Da Nang than this three-bedroom villa. While it’s part of a group of resort-serviced villas, it feels like a little residential haven.

When I say it’s perfect for families, I mean it. The home is fitted with all the kid’s dinnerware and bedding you could need, so you won’t have to carry your own along with you.

4. Son Tra Peninsula – Another Great Neighborhood in Da Nang For Families to Stay In

Son Tra Peninsula, also known as Monkey Mountain, juts out into the South China Sea like an island. It’s home to some of the city’s most beautiful viewpoints, making it a hiker’s paradise. The name actually means “faeries landing place.” The Vietnamese believe this is where faeries would come for singing, dancing, and playing chess so keep your eyes peeled for some little flying friends.

Lady buddha, Da nang, Vietnam
Why hello there Lady Buddha, how goes it?

There are a few isolated resorts around Monkey Mountain’s edge, but most accommodations are along the peninsula’s eastern side. As this is a quieter area of the city, it’s a great place to learn how to motorbike in Vietnam.

If this district looks like a tree on the map, the trunk is a large residential section attached to the beachside of Da Nang. Confused? Look at a map, and you’ll see what I mean. Son Tra is packed with beachfront hotels and resorts with easy access to the city.

Gaze out across the ocean and over the city skyline from the terrace at this hotel. In addition to epic views (which are to be expected from the rooms, too), this hotel offers free bicycles, which you can use to explore the neighborhood or even just to get to the beach.

The Leaf Boutique | Best Boutique Hotel in Son Tra Peninsula

The Leaf Boutique Da Nang Vietnam

We’ve all seen pictures of the eco buildings dripping with greenery towering above a city skyline. But how many of us can say we’ve stayed in one? This boutique hotel prides itself on elegance and environmentally friendly practices and is one of the most beautiful places to stay in Da Nang.

From one side, it looks like part of a tropical jungle, but from the rooftop pool, views from the hotel blend into the ocean like a painting. On top of this, it has an out-of-this-world breakfast buffet serving everything from international cuisine to local specialities.

The Backpacker Hostel and Spa | Best Hostel in Son Tra Peninsula

The Backpacker Hostel and spa Da Nang Vietnam

If there are two words that don’t typically fit together, it’s hostel and spa—until now… The Backpacker Hostel and Spa offers the best of both worlds, with affordable accommodation ranging from dormitories to private suites, made unique by its spa and wellness center.

To top things off (literally), the hostel also has a rooftop pool, bar, and shared lounge space.

What To Pack For Da Nang

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.

Travel Insurance is NEVER a bad idea. Travel is full of uncertainties, that’s why we love it!

Da Nang in particular has some pretty wild moped traffic and I would recommend purchasing good travel insurance to stay protected whilst visiting!

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Da Nang

There’s a big reason why Da Nang is one of Vietnam’s most desirable cities. It’s coastal, surrounded by gorgeous mountains, and close to the country’s most famous ancient town, Hoi An.

When it comes to where to stay in Da Nang, Son Tra suits nature enthusiasts best. Khue My stands out for its luxury resorts and beaches, and Ngu Hanh Son offers a unique spiritual significance. Across the river on the city side, Hai Chau is the vibrant heart of Da Nang, ideal for those who like to be in the midst of the action.

If unique accommodation is what you’re after, book a spot at this Four Bedroom Home with a Rooftop Deck for ultimate privacy and luxury, or reserve your spot in a shipping container at Rom Casa Hostel Da Nang.
