Dalat Family Hostel | Best Hostel in Da Lat
Few hostels have left a mark like Dalat Family Hostel has on my heart. Not only is it the cheapest hostel I’ve stayed in (for $1 a night, I mean c’mon on…) but they really are a family hostel. You are greeted by a hug at check-in and check-out and made extra family dinner to accommodate my late arrival. I felt like I was getting looked after by my mum and, after months of travelling, it really meant a lot. It was, by far, my favourite hostel in Vietnam.

Da Lat isn’t just known for its history and scenery. The nightlife in Da Lat is one of the most attractive things about it to its many visitors every year. The best place to stay in Da Lat is Phuong 3 if you’re planning a trip filled with partying!

Da Lat’s Five Best Neighborhoods to Stay in
Da Lat is not a typical Vietnamese destination. Forget sweltering beaches and steamy jungles; this mountain town has a pleasant climate all year round. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that it was one of my favourite places in Vietnam.
The town is covered in an almost other-worldly mist, giving it the nickname “City of Eternal Spring.” Imagine waking up to chilly, fresh mornings and spending your days exploring beneath a canopy of beautiful, rolling clouds—pure magic!
Da Lat is also a must-see for architecture enthusiasts. The city centre is your best bet for breathtaking historical sites. Think French colonial houses and quirky buildings that are each a tribute to the town’s distinct history.
I highly recommend staying in the city centre if this is your first visit. Located in the centre of the action, it offers a thriving nightlife scene (think craft beer bars and live music), bustling markets, and historical sites like the Da Lat Railway Station. If you want to be right in the middle of things and don’t mind a tourist buzz, it’s ideal.
Phuong 8 is an ideal location for kayaking, cycling, and taking in the breathtaking scenery. There are also plenty of lakeside cafes and restaurants, making it an excellent choice for those who’d rather be in the midst of nature.
Phuong 3 is all about clubs with live music and late-night bars; the vibe is vibrant and eclectic here. If letting loose after a day of exploring is your thing, this is the place to be.
Do you crave some French charm? Head to Phuong 10! This neighbourhood is brimming with beautiful colonial architecture, charming eateries, and a laid-back feel.
Tuyen Lam Lake in Phuong 4 is ideal for budget-conscious travellers seeking to experience the “real” Da Lat. Known for its quirky cafes and hidden waterfalls, (like the magical Datanla!) Phuong 4 definitely has more of a local and off-the-beaten-track vibe.
Da Lat is also a really easy place to get to! It has its very own main railway station which makes travelling to other areas and cities in Vietnam a snap. There are also two airports very close to the centre of the city: Lien Khuong Airport and Cam Ly Airport, so getting here will never be an issue.
1. City Centre – Where to Stay in Da Lat for Your First Time
Da Lat’s city centre is the town’s pulsing heart, with a bustling mix of history, food, and adventure – ideal for budget-conscious backpackers. The hostels here are notoriously social so you won’t have any issues making travel pals if you’re a solo backpacker! There’s plenty of culture to soak up in the central Da Lat whether it’s from the city’s colonial history or its Buddhist routes.
Visit Linh Son Pagoda, a stunning hilltop pagoda, to immerse yourself in Da Lat’s heritage. The views from here are spectacular! In the evening, definitely don’t miss a stroll you around the gorgeous Xuan Huong Lake at sunset… If you want to be extra fancy, you can also rent a boat.
The city centre might get a little touristy, but hey, that just means more people to share your Da Lat adventures with, right? Plus, you’re never far from must-see spots like Xuan Huong Lake and the Da Lat Night Market.
Bonus points: the city centre boasts some of the best hostels in town, all with that sweet Vietnamese “bang for your buck” that we all know and love.

Hide Yo’ Money!FAQ about Finding a Place to Stay in Da Lat
Here’s what people usually ask us about the areas of Da Lat and where to stay.
What To Pack For Da Lat
Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.
Ear Plugs
Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.
Hanging Laundry Bag
Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.
Sea To Summit Micro Towel
Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.
Monopoly Deal
Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.
Grayl Geopress Water Bottle
Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!
Check out my definitive Hotel Packing list for even more top packing tips!
How long should I spend in Da Lat?
I’d recommend you spend at least three days in Da Lat. If you’ve decided to treat yourself and stay in one of Da Lat’s best hotels you could definitely string this out to a whole week!
Where is the best place to stay in Da Lat for backpackers?
The city centre is the best place to stay in Da Lat for backpackers as that’s where most of the hostels are concentrated. Most of the city centre is walkable so you won’t have any trouble getting around plus you can meet other fellow travellers in hostels to share the cost of doing tours that are further out of the centre!
Is Da Lat worth visiting?
Da Lat was one of the coolest places I visited in Vietnam and is definitely worth visiting. The mild climate was a welcome change to the humidity that hits the rest of South East Asia and the natural beauty that surrounds the city is so serene and peaceful.
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance for Da Lat
Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Da Lat.
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Da Lat
This city, nestled in the misty embrace of the Central Highlands, provides a refreshing respite from the usual South East Asia humidity and a plethora of experiences for every traveller, no matter your budget.
If this is your first trip to Da Lat, you should definitely begin your adventure in the heart of the city. The City Centre is a thriving hub with affordable guesthouses, renowned landmarks and beautiful cafes that offer a glimmer into the city’s French colonial past. Immerse yourself in the stunning mountain views from a cable car at Da Lat Cable Car Station or find some zen at Linh Son Pagoda.
If you’re looking for a social hostel with good facilities and great vibes (all for $1 a night too, might I add) then you should definitely look at staying at Dalat Family Hostel. Its central location means that all of the city centre’s attractions are within walking distance and the hostel also organises great tours to see the other main attractions that lie outside of the city’s centre.
If you’re looking for some peace and serenity for your Vietnamese getaway, I’d say that the best hotels lie around Phuong 10. Also known as the French Quarter, I’d argue that this is one of the coolest neighbourhoods to stay in Da Lat for its mix of culture, stunning views and overall chill vibes. Zen Valley Dalat is a great choice if you’re looking to unwind as its amenities and surrounding mountain views guarantee a fab time.
Pack your bags and your sense of adventure as Da Lat invites you to experience its charm! This enchanting city, with its misty mountains, quaint cafes, vibrant neighbourhoods, and boundless adventure, awaits you. (Just don’t forget to bring a light jacket; you might actually need it here!)
