Koh Rong is an absolutely stunning island destination located in the Gulf of Thailand and it’s easy to see why travellers flock there every year.

Think white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and lush landscapes begging to be explored.

Whether you’re out to go scuba diving, snorkelling, or simply want to relax and swim, it’s the ideal tropical getaway a short ferry ride from the mainland.

The island is home to an abundance of wildlife on land as well as incredible marine life that calls the vibrant coral reefs home. If you’re lucky, you might even get to witness the spectacle of bioluminescent plankton at night, an incredible natural phenomenon.

Now, I’m really here to tell you about some of the best hotels in Koh Rong because I know it can be a daunting task.

So sit back, relax, and get ready to be (mentally) transported to this tropical paradise.

Selection Criteria

Now, before I get into the real saucy part of the article (and why we’re all here in the first place), it’s important to set out a few criteria. You know, just a few things to consider when choosing the best place to stay in Koh Rong. Ultimately, you want to make sure you employ the 5 P’s approach – proper planning prevents poor performance.

  • Location: Firstly, and probably most importantly, is location, as I’m sure you’re well aware. As they say, location, location, location! You’ll need to decide on when exactly you want to stay. Do you want to be close to the ferry port or do you want to be on a secluded part of the island? These kinds of decisions will impact where you ultimately stay on your island getaway.
  • Customer reviews and ratings: Reviews have become one of the most trusted ways to establish how good or bad a place is. You can’t quite beat the first-hand experience of travellers who have stayed at the accommodation you’re interested in before you. Luckily, Booking.com has a trustworthy review system that is submitted by guests who have stayed there. I will always check out these reviews before I book a spot and see what it’s all about.
  • Amenities and services: The amenities and services offered at a hotel are also super important aspects as they can make or break your stay. They can also elevate your stay and take it to the next level, really adding to your overall experience of a destination. There is a great variety of amenities and services offered at each of the hotels below that are sure to get the juices flowing.
  • Price range: Last, and definitely not least, is price, which is probably one of the most considered factors for travellers, especially those on a shoestring budget who are backpacking in Cambodia. Whether you’re after a high-end luxury hotel or simply a relaxed, casual spot, there’s something here to suit everyone’s pocket and taste.

Now that you’re equipped with a bit more knowledge about what to consider before booking your hotel, let’s take a look at some of the best hotels in Koh Rong.

    Top Hotels in Koh Rong

Koh Rong is definitely one of the coolest places to visit in Cambodia (well, it was one of my favourite stops on my backpacking trip). Whether you’re an avid diver or simply want to relax on the beach and soak up the sun, it’s a must-see stop on any Southeast Asian adventure.

    Anaya Koh Rong

    Anaya Koh Rong

Kicking things off with a bang here is Anaya Hotel, a stunning beachfront haven that really packs a punch. If it’s both adventure and relaxation that you’re after, then you need not look any further. You’ll have the perfect mix of stunning natural beauty and modern comfort all blended up into one delicious island smoothie.

The hotel features spacious and well-designed rooms that have their own private balconies overlooking the crystal clear waters a mere stone’s throw away. But it definitely doesn’t end there. You’ll have an outdoor swimming pool in case you get bored of swimming in the sea, a beachfront bar, and an epic restaurant serving both local and international cuisine. Can you see why it’s one of my favourite hotels in Cambodia!?

Just to top it off and really put the cherry on the cake, the hotel also offers outdoor activities like kayaking, snorkelling, and local boat tours around the island. I mean, does it get much better than that? I’ll give you a hint – not really!

    Tamu Koh Rong

    Tamu Koh Rong

You might think you’re seeing double but don’t worry, I haven’t gone mad! Tamu Hotel is another stunning beachfront resort that lines the shores of Koh Rong, showing off its eco-conscious design in the process. In fact, the hotel has put a large emphasis on sustainability overall and that is really present in both its design and modern comforts.

You can expect some pretty epic amenities, too, with an infinity pool, spa, and beachside restaurant. But it doesn’t end there. Water sports are the name of the game here with paddle boarding, boat trips, and snorkelling all fun activities to get involved in. All of this and more, in an idyllic seaside location set amongst towering palm trees, is the perfect recipe to kick back, relax, and engage in full reset mode.

    BeachWalk Koh Rong

    BeachWalk Koh Rong

Looking for a tranquil island escape just steps away from the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Thailand? Then Beachwalk is your spot! There are a variety of room options available, ranging from privates to beachfront bungalows, my personal favourite may I add.

You’ll have a wide range of activities to choose from too, like kayaking, snorkelling, and paddle boarding if that’s your cup of tea, heck, you might even spot an ancient fossil on the beach! If you simply want to kick back on a lounger around the pool, soak up the sun, and smash a few pina coladas, then that’s very much on the cards too. You’ll also be within close proximity to the island’s nightlife and attractions while still being able to take advantage of the laid-back vibe. It’s really the best of both worlds here!

    Small Pack Problems? 😉

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

    The Secret Garden Koh Rong

    The Secret Garden Koh Rong

It might be a bold statement to say that The Secret Garden has one of the best beaches in the entire country, but hell, I’m willing to put it all on the line. The hotel also offers a more intimate experience, with spacious and modern rooms, and great amenities to match.

Now, I’m a massive foodie – I travel to eat and I live to eat. So, food is really important to me, especially when I’m on the road, so to speak. Luckily, the on-site restaurant serves up banging food that is fresh, delicious and made using local ingredients. I mean, what more do you want? Well, there’s an offering of both local Cambodian dishes as well as Western dishes for those less adventurous eaters.

    The One Resort

    The One Resort

One of my favourite aspects of a hotel is when it offers a luxurious yet laid-back experience. Now, this is exactly what you can expect from The One Resort, located on the pristine Sok San Beach. The resort features awesome beachfront bungalows that are modern and spacious, and offer unparalleled views of the sea.

As an added little easter egg, the resort has its own stretch of private beach which can only be accessed by guests of the resort, so it always feels super safe. This means you can kick back, relax, and watch the sunset or simply bronze your buns without the crowd factor. Bliss! Lastly, there’s an epic beachfront bar to pick up your favourite cocktail or an ice-cold local beer. If you ask me, there are all the makings for an unforgettable trip in this tropical paradise.

    Paradiso Ocean Front Bungalows

Paradiso Ocean Front Bungalows Koh Rong

Imagine walking out of your very own private bungalow, down a couple of stairs, and taking a few steps straight into the sea. Well, dream no more because that’s exactly what you’re in for at Paradiso Ocean Front Bungalows. The resort offers a number of the usual outdoor activities such as snorkelling and kayaking, or you can simply stroll along the endless white sand beaches until your heart’s content.

In addition, there are some pretty epic opportunities to head out on a jungle trek to discover the local outdoors and wildlife that call it home. The location really is second-to-none and aside from being literally on the beach, other local restaurants and shops are also within walking distance. It really doesn’t get more convenient than this!

If you’re simply looking to just relax and unwind, then this tropical paradise escape makes for the perfect venue. With an epic restaurant on-site, a terrace for those evening sundowner drinks, and a hop and a skip to the beach, you really won’t want to leave.

Get Insured BEFORE Visiting Koh Rong

I don’t travel anywhere without insurance, and neither should you. Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Koh Rong.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!
