Staying in a Bed and Breakfast in Maine

Maine is one of those places where you can browse boutique shops in local villages, eat a classic lobster roll, and explore acres of pine forests within the space of one day. Maine’s Route 1 is almost as well known as the West Coast equivalent and is one of the most highly recommended road trip routes on the East Coast.

The best way to experience quintessential Maine is by road, stopping off at lesser-known towns and cities to spend a night in different Maine bed and breakfasts and inns along the way.

B&Bs in this state often operate from historical homes built as far back as the 1800s. With authentic interiors such as hardwood floors, decorative skirting, and antique furnishings, many of these spots seem to transport you back in time to a different era.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at my pick of the best B&Bs in Maine.

The Top 10 Bed and Breakfasts in Maine

Let’s take a look through this list of the top ten B&Bs in Maine. I’ve curated this list with you in mind! Whatever your budget and travel needs, I have considered all types of travellers when creating this list, so I’m sure you’ll find something that works for you.

Overall Best Value B&B in Maine – Family Room at Traditional B&B

Why not start with a bang? This historic mansion is one of the best Maine bed and breakfasts because of its value for money. The Elms is conveniently located in Westbrook, right between Portland and the Interstate highway.

The building looks just like it would have a century ago, with classic wooden interiors, high ceilings, decorative wallpapers, and hanging chandeliers. You’ll also enjoy access to a spacious lawn and games room shared with other guests. The room in question sleeps four guests comfortably in two double beds and has a private bathroom.

Skolfield Inn is the perfect spot to stay if you’re looking for budget accommodation while you backpack across the USA. Although this spot doesn’t offer breakfast, it boasts other B&B-like features, including off-street parking and a Netflix-linked flat-screen TV.

The century-old Maine Inn is located in a quiet neighbourhood on the West End, near the Old Port and the Western Promenade Park. Guests can expect a bright guest room with high ceilings and bay windows overlooking the private garden. If you’re wondering where to stay in Portland, this would be the ideal spot.

    White Sails Inn

    White Sails Inn

White Sails Inn is located on the southern Maine coast. It is beautifully decorated with spacious guest rooms and delicious breakfasts. The hosts Susanne and Lori are wonderful – they provide freshly baked cookies and hot drinks whenever you like during the day.

My favourite parts? The inn has a great bar, a front porch and a fire pit that the hosts light each night. It’s a great place to chill out and enjoy after a day of exploring. Plus, the breakfasts are bangin’ and are made from scratch each morning.

The Inn is centrally located and only a short drive to the beaches in Newburyport, Portland, Old Orchard Beach and Ogunquit. The location is far enough away from downtown Kennebunkport that you won’t have traffic issues, but close enough that you don’t have to travel far to be there. You’ll be in Dock Square in no time.

    Waldo Emerson Inn

    Waldo Emerson Inn

How often do you get to stay in a home over 200 years old? The Inn is full of history and there are imprints of the past 200 years scattered throughout the property. However, it has all the modern amenities you could need for a comfortable stay. The hosts go above and beyond, thinking about the small details that make a difference. Like writing your name on the door!

The location is ideal, just nestled between downtown Kennebunk and downtown Kennebunkport. And if you’re travelling with your furry friend, this spot is pet-friendly so they can tag along too. They even provide a dog bowl and protective cover for the bedspread.

Classic Seaside Inn with Beach Access

Classic Seaside Inn with Beach Access, Maine

Without a doubt one of the best B&Bs in Maine for its exquisite ocean views, you won’t want to miss staying in this classic seaside inn. Not only does this inn have second-to-none views, but it also boasts spacious suites, which each have a private balcony, workspace, and en-suite bathroom.

When you aren’t enjoying the views of the Maine coast from bed, grab a drink in the cosy bar downstairs before settling in for dinner at the on-site tavern. Breakfast is served daily and can be enjoyed in the warm sunshine on the porch during the summer months.

    Candlebay Inn

    Candlebay Inn

Maine is a haven for young families, and I’ve found just the spot to settle in with your little ones. Candlebay Inn has a range of family-friendly guest rooms for up to five guests. The host is lovely and goes out of her way to make you feel welcome. She also makes a bloody good breakfast!

This charming historical house with original wood flooring is located just away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Freeport. However, it’s within walking distance of everything you need. It’s also got a lovely, sunny shared living room that you can relax and hang out in if you don’t feel like heading out.

The Elmhurst Inn in Bar Habour

    The Elmhurst Inn

To close my list off, The Elmhurst Inn is located in the popular spot to stay in Bar Harbour. It’s in a great location to explore the area from and has lots of different guest rooms to choose from that can cater to up to 4 guests.

The two-course breakfast made by the hosts is delicious and different each day which you can enjoy in the garden. Not a bad way to start the day, huh?! There is free coffee available all day every day so don’t worry, coffee addicts, you’ll be well caffeinated here.

    FAQs About B&Bs in Maine

Don’t Forget Your Maine Travel Insurance

It’s never fun when things go wrong while travelling. Grabbing yourself some good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Maine.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!

Final Thoughts on Bed and Breakfasts in Maine

As the starting point of one of the country’s most popular New England road trip routes, Maine is a hotspot destination throughout the entire year. It’s a picture-perfect paradise for foodies, outdoor adventurers, and shopaholics. It offers a bunch of great activities for families, couples, and solo travellers.

Spending some time in one of the best bed and breakfasts in Maine is a sure way to experience the state like a local. Whether you’re looking for a comfortable room for your young family or a romantic spot for two, you won’t struggle to find an authentic New English B&B in this beautiful state.

If you’re still unsure where to stay, I’d recommend locking in my overall best value B&B: Family Room at Traditional B&B. This historical building is home to a gorgeous B&B that will feel like your home away from home. It won’t break the bank and can fit up to four guests. You can’t go wrong!

Wherever you decide to stay and in whatever season you choose, you’ll be in for a fabulous time in Maine. Like I said, they don’t call it “vacationland” for nothing!
