What to Expect from Airbnbs in New Zealand

Travelling in New Zealand can be an absolutely wild and extraordinary time. From the top of the north island to the bottom of the south, the diversity of landscapes and experiences is endless.

But the big question, and the reason we are all here, is to reveal the BEST Airbnbs in New Zealand. The types of Airbnbs you’ll find vary depending on how urban or rural the region is.

In the urban areas of New Zealand (think: Auckland, Wellington, and Queenstown), you’ll find plenty of private apartments and rooms for those craving convenience and luxury. Now, you’re not likely to find a townhouse of 16 Airbnb apartments located on a random mountain in the countryside, so don’t expect to find these anywhere other than the main cities.

The country itself is so naturally beautiful that many of the best Airbnbs are far away from the big cities. If you want to really get into the wilderness (or even just take a short drive out of the city) and see what makes New Zealand truly special, staying in an Airbnb like this is one of the best ways to do it.

It’s true that generally speaking, apartments have the most luxury options — but as you’ll see, some of these homes are literal mansions, with enough luxury to make even the Kardashians feel guilty (unlikely).

Whether you’re looking for a city getaway or a retreat to nature, a luxury mansion or a cheap bed to crash in, I’ve got you covered.

The 15 Top Airbnbs in New Zealand

Okay, folks, I’m about to take you through the hottest spots on New Zealand’s Airbnb market. From insane levels of luxury to homely bed and breakfasts. Whether you’re heading with stacks of cash ready to splash or on a strict shoestring budget, I’ve got you covered.

So here goes, the part we’ve all been waiting for. Here are my picks for the 15 best Airbnbs in New Zealand.

Natural Mind Retreat Studio | Overall Best Value Airbnb in New Zealand

Natural Mind Retreat Studio

Let’s dive straight in with what might just be New Zealand’s BEST bang-for-your-buck Airbnb. This apartment is a minimalistic haven that doesn’t skim on the luxury. The best part? Staying here will keep your wallet nice and heavy.

It’s impeccably furnished and designed, with oh-so-crisp white walls that meet warm, natural wooden floors. Oh, did I mention… there are TONS of plants everywhere (huge brownie points in my books). There is also a Nespresso machine that you can use to whip up a delicious brew in the morning.

This studio is in The Heritage Building and gives you access to the building’s roof-top heated pool with breathtaking views, an indoor heated lap pool and spa pool, an all-weather tennis court, a gym AND an on-site restaurant. Yep, you could pretty much live here forever.

It’s nestled right in the heart of Auckland’s city centre, which means you’re within walking distance of pretty much any urban attraction you can think of. If your heart beats for clean aesthetics and chic spaces, without the splurge, you’ve hit the jackpot here. This studio apartment reigns supreme in all aspects.

Self-Contained Mini Guesthouse | Best Budget Airbnb in New Zealand

Self-Contained Mini Guesthouse

This place is a rare find in New Zealand that doesn’t break the bank. It’s no secret that New Zealand can be expensive to travel so finding golden nuggets like this Airbnb is like winning the lottery.

This budget Airbnb in New Zealand has everything you need for a comfortable stay. But as the name goes, it’s a “mini” guest house. That being said, you won’t have all the amenities you should expect in a full house. What you will have is an adorable little bedroom, a private bathroom, and a whole lot of charm!

This little guesthouse is located on the outskirts of Auckland, on the sunny north shore, you’ll be a short walk away from public transport into the city centre.

You won’t necessarily even need that though, as your nearby area is also full of cute cafés and restaurants where you can lap up that Aucklander lifestyle. If you’re after a bit of peace and quiet, it’s a great option instead of a hostel in New Zealand.

If you’ve got a car, this is a neat place to base yourself as the north shore is chocker with beaches. Plus, you’ll be an hour from the rugged shores of Murawai and Piha if you fancy a surf. Or, maybe you’re up for the Matakana Weekend Markets and hitting Omaha Beach after? All are great day trips from this Airbnb.

Glass-Walled Mountainside Mansion | Over-the-Top Luxury Airbnb in New Zealand

Glass-Walled Mountainside Mansion

Known as “The Jagged Edge,” this Airbnb might just be the convergence of the very finest of everything New Zealand has to offer. First of all, look at that view; imagine relaxing in that pool during sunset with a glass of wine! Plus, they keep the pool at hot tub temperatures… if I could transport there now, I would.

The place has a striking triangular shape, with glass exterior walls and a beautiful private lawn. You’ve also got a private hot tub, three master bedrooms, and even an indoor fireplace. This place is fit for the Kardashians but in a Tony Stark kinda way.

The location is also superb: you’ll be high up in the mountains with Lake Wakatipu pretty much in your front yard and at the same time only a 20-minute drive from Queenstown. A remotely central paradise! It’s easily one of the best Airbnbs in New Zealand.

Psst…

We’ve turned this post into an Airbnb wishlist: compare prices & locations easily!

Comfort in the Wellington CBD | Perfect New Zealand Airbnb for Solo Travelers

Comfort in the Wellington CBD

Ah, you’re solo travelling in New Zealand? Say no more! Tuck yourself away from the wild hostel nights for a few days and into this snug spot that feels just like home (minus the chores). This bed and breakfast will be your perfect home away from home.

If you’re down for exploring everything “Welly”, as the locals say, offers – you’re in the perfect spot for it. This pad is close to public transport to get you all across Wellington and some of the best restaurants and nightlife in the city.

Then imagine landing in your own modern sanctuary after a day of exploring. Not only will you have your own room in this bed and breakfast, but you’ll also be able to kick back into the comfy living space and unleash your inner chef in the kitchen.

For many backpackers, the real charm of travelling the world lies in the people. There’s something undeniably special about becoming friends with people on the other side of the world who are from a completely different culture. Hence why my favourite part was mingling with the hosts… especially their mini schnauzer, Edie. Edie was a big highlight <3

Fern Room in Auckland | Perfect Short-Term Airbnb in New Zealand for Digital Nomads

Fern Room in Auckland

If you’re rockin’ a digital nomad lifestyle, you’re probably looking for a speedy wifi connection and a comfy space to work. That’s exactly what this Airbnb provides.

Though it’s only a private room, you’ll have a huge bed, a dedicated workspace, and a sumptuous bathtub if you fancy a late-night soak with a good book! The whole place is surrounded by beautiful landscaping and gardens. Detox, unwind, and relax after a long day at work.

You’ll be in the Newmarket area, known as one of the best neighbourhoods in Auckland for clothing stores, cafés, and restaurants. Join the Aucklanders, chuck on your Lululemon activewear, and head out for some brunch and shopping! And, maaaaaybe sneak in some exercise with a walk up Mount Eden.

Plus, the property is only a three-minute walk away from public transportation — so the world is your oyster! Time to get explorin’, baby.

Travel with peace of mind. Travel WITH a security belt.
Active Roots Security Belt

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

More Epic Airbnbs in New Zealand

Here are a few more of my favourite Airbnbs in New Zealand.

Tranquil Retreat Home

Tranquil Retreat Home

I’m just gonna get right into it: this home is spacious, very private, and just has a certain magical vibe to it. In my opinion, it’s particularly well-suited for travelling couples looking for a romantic getaway.

I mean, there’s a huge fluffy bed, an outdoor bathtub, and an outdoor dining table on the front porch — what more could you ask for?

In terms of location, you’ll be in the south in the tiny town of Wanaka, surrounded by a wall of majestic snow-covered mountains. Nearby there are glaciers, ski resorts, lakes, and forests. If you’re a nature-lover, that should give this Airbnb some bonus points!

Not to mention Wanaka is one of the coolest AND most beautiful towns in New Zealand, again, in my opinion. Whether you want to spend your time snuggling in the warm Airbnb or adventuring up, down and across the lakes and mountains – staying in Wanaka is the best bet.

Mountain Lake Chalet

Mountain Lake Chalet

If you’re travelling as a family, you’re likely looking for a place that’s private and well-located. As far as the privacy piece is concerned, this chalet is nestled on the side of a densely forested mountain. No need to worry about screaming kids or loud TVs. It’ll just be you, your family, and nature.

In addition, there’s a fully equipped kitchen, a bathtub, a dedicated workspace, and a balcony with some unreal mountain views. In other words, pretty much everything you could ask for.

As far as location goes, the property is situated on Mount Iron in the small town of Wanaka. You’ll be able to see Lake Wanaka right from your balcony, and there’s no shortage of biking, trekking, and other outdoor activities available right outside your door.

So, pack your best hiking boots and prepare the kids for some adventure activities.

Sleek Papamoa Beach House

Sleek Papamoa Beach House

Okay, the inside of this beach home looks like it belongs in a magazine. And it’s not just the sitting room — every corner is simply stunning!

Even the outside is gorgeous and wonderfully landscaped. But this Airbnb is more than looks. If you stay here, you’ll have a full kitchen, a dedicated workspace, and a giant deck with an outdoor table.

This one holds a special place in my heart as it’s in my hometown. I may be a little biased, but my hometown rocks and is the perfect place for anyone who loves surfing, chilling on the beach, and drinking good coffee.

This Airbnb is only a three-minute walk from the beautiful Papamoa Beach, just southeast of Auckland. This is one of the best Airbnbs in New Zealand If you’re all about interior aesthetics and beach life.

Cosy Shipping Container Cabin

Cosy Shipping Container Cabin

You know what they say… one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. From a discarded shipping container to a charming little Airbnb, this property proves it! The inside is tiny, but it’s got a fluffy queen bed, kitchenette, TV, and bathroom.

The location of this property is perfect for two reasons: 1) it’s nestled in a series of rolling hills with a stunning mountain backdrop, and 2) it’s right off the main highway, which can take you to Wellington in under an hour. This place is unique and convenient!

Plus, you’ll be staying on a lovely family’s property who will welcome you into their cabins. Not only will you be greeted by the friendly family but also by their dogs, cats, and horses too!

Yellow Submarine

Yellow submarine

Ever fancied living out your Beatles fantasy with Yellow Submarine as your soundtrack? Yeah, I thought so…

Nestled into the forest, this quirky yellow submarine proves look can be deceiving – small on the outside but big on the inside. This place is bursting with a Victorian steampunk vibe that you’ll either love or hate.

Dive into its unique interiors, from a steampunk living space to a Beatles-inspired bathroom. Oh, and did I mention there is no Wifi? Yep, that’s right friends, this is true escapism and a real under-the-sea illusion.

If you’re after something a little different, this could be just what you’re after. I mean, as if you need any other reasons to come to New Zealand, this has got to the the ultimate temptation!

Modern Backcountry Cabin

Modern Backcountry Cabin

A good honeymoon is all about the mood and vibe. Of course, everyone’s preferences are different, but if you ask me, a private luxury cabin with floor-to-ceiling glass windows sets the vibe pretty nicely!

The inside of this cabin is a perfect mix of rustic and modern, with a wood-burning hot stove sitting right next to a streamlined kitchen. Outside, you’ll have access to a private hot tub — the best spot to see the stars!

Speaking of the stars, I’ve got a great travel tip for ya. This cabin is located in one of the most beautiful places for stargazing in New Zealand: the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve. I know that’s a bold claim, but trust me; Google it and you’ll see what I mean.

Spacious Seaside Bedroom

Spacious Seaside Bedroom

Right off the bat, it’s easy to see that this room is awesome; it’s spacious and clean, with cheerful decor. Booking a room in this house means that you’ll have a HUGE master bedroom with an ensuite and a private sun deck.

You’ll share the property with other travellers and the host, so if you’re up for making travel buddies, this could be a great time to mix and mingle.

What really sets this property apart from other private rooms is the shared facilities. There’s a huge kitchen, a huge sitting room with a baby grand piano, as well as a communal spa area with a hot tub. Ideal spaces for unwinding after a day of exploring.

This room is located on the outskirts of Auckland. The charming Titirangi village, a hotspot for cafés, markets, and restaurants, is a 20-minute walk away. Plus, it’s super nice to the budget which is always a BIG tick for me. Thank you to this Airbnb for keeping us budget backpackers happy.

Tuscan Thermal Retreat

Tuscan Thermal Retreat

This property truly is the ultimate getaway for a weekend (or more) with your best friends. First of all, it’s utterly gigantic, with a private pool and private hot tub.

But not only that — there’s a mini gym, a ping pong table, a pool table, and… well, pretty much every other amenity your mind can imagine. I’m serious, this place is crazy and I LOVE it.

It’s located about 2.5 hours south of Auckland, near the coastal city of Tauranga (again, my town!) The immediate neighbourhood near this Airbnb is pretty residential, so it isn’t exactly the best in terms of activities right on your doorstep, but when you’re staying at this Airbnb, you don’t need much else.

If you’re heading here with a car, staying in Tauranga is the best thing you can do. It’s home to EPIC New Zealand day hikes, beaches, waterfalls and so much more. So, if you can bring yourself to leave the entertainment inside this Airbnb, there is a shit load of exploring to do nearby.

Mountain-View Apartment

Mountain-View Apartment

I’d have a hard time watching TV in this apartment, because I’m pretty sure whatever the TV could show would be no match for the real-life view just out the window! This place to stay in Queenstown offers a fully equipped kitchen, a washer and dryer, and a cool counter-style workspace.

This Airbnb is super modern and homely. You’ll be located just a 10-minute walk into Queenstown centre, which is one of New Zealand’s most iconic cities.

Why is it iconic? Because it boasts INSANE views like this. It’s also known for being the “adventure capital of the world,” which means you’ll have a tough time running out of activities to do.

Convenient Condo in Queenstown

Convenient Condo in Queenstown

If you’re looking for nightlife in New Zealand, Queenstown is the place to be. During the day, enjoy this condo’s huge TV, balcony sitting area, and fully equipped kitchen. The couch is HUGE and comfortable, the perfect place to curl up, order Uber eats, and nurse a hangover.

This place to stay in Queenstown, which means that come nightfall, you can head out on foot and enjoy the city’s best clubs, bars, and restaurants. Given the location and quality of this Airbnb in New Zealand, the price is more than reasonable!

FAQs about Airbnbs in New Zealand

Here’s what people usually ask me when they look for holiday homes in New Zealand.

What to Pack for New Zealand

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for an Airbnb stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.

Final Thoughts on New Zealand Airbnbs

Here’s the thing, folks. It’s difficult to come up with a list of only 15 Airbnbs in New Zealand when the country itself is huge and immensely diverse. The options here are nearly endless, and I’ve only just scratched the surface.

My point? Use this list as a baseline for conducting your own research, and you’ll find the Airbnb(s) of your dreams. But overall, I think I’ve done a pretty good job and I hope you found this list helpful in your search for the best Airbnb in New Zealand.

If you’re still unsure which Airbnb to book, I’d lock in my top overall best-value Airbnb: Natural Mind Retreat Studio. This Airbnb will set you up nicely in Auckland (where you’ll likely fly into). The Airbnb provides a beautiful room and a HEAP of amenities such as a rooftop pool, gyms, spa pools, and an on-site restaurant. It’s the best bang for your buck around town.

Regardless of your choices, it’s hard to go wrong in New Zealand. So live it up and savour every moment in the wondrous country I call home! It’s pretty bloody incredible.
