The tiny nation of Brunei is a fascinating place – there’s no better way to describe this hidden gem. It’s located on the island of Borneo, which in itself is an incredibly interesting location, as it’s shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.

Furthermore, it’s made up of two distinct sections that are surrounded by both the South China Sea and Malaysia. I mean, what a start!

But it doesn’t stop there – there’s so much more to this little nation that punches above its weight class.

I’m talking about unique attractions like Istana Nurul Iman, Kampong Ayer, the Ulu Temburong National Park, and the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Then there’s the incredibly rich Malay traditions and Islamic heritage that bring with them amazing traditional arts and crafts as well as mouth-watering cuisine.

This sounds pretty epic, right?

Well, all you need to do is secure yourself an Airbnb in Brunei, book that flight, and you’re ready to go. Rentals in Brunei are pretty easy to come and are a great mix of traditional and modern. But more of that later.

I’m here to tell you more about Airbnbs in this fascinating place just to tickle those fancies a little more.

So, strap yourself in and get ready for the top spots that money can rent you.

What to Expect from Airbnbs in Brunei

Before I get into the good stuff, I think it’s important to cover a few bases and set the expectations for Airbnbs in Brunei. I think I’ve laid a pretty good foundation of what Brunei is like and some of the things that you can look forward to during a visit.

But there’s plenty more to lure you in if you’re not sold already on this gem of a country during your trip around Southeast Asia.

If you’re an outdoor lover with an adventurous spirit, buckle up because there’s no shortage of activities to get stuck into in Brunei. Beaches, rainforests, and seas are huge draws when it comes to Asia. Brunei is no different with incredible rainforest treks, cave exploration, wildlife spotting, amazing waterfalls and hiking trails, and pristine beaches.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to take advantage of all of this?

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Brunei
A magnificent work of art.

My go-to recommendation when visiting a new place is always to grab an Airbnb purely because I feel they’re more authentic. I have nothing against hotels, but I really feel you experience a place more by immersing yourself in the local neighbourhood. And Airbnbs in Brunei are no different.

They offer a wide range of accommodation options ranging from spacious homes and cosy apartments to cosy cottages and even luxury villas. You might even be lucky enough to find yourself rentals that are sustainable, nature-focused eco-lodges or traditional Kampong houses for a more immersive cultural experience.

Overall, you can expect a more local feeling when it comes to the accommodations, with friendly hosts who aim to please. Bruneians are generally polite and friendly people but it’s important to respect their culture, tradition, religion, and their way of life. But that’s just general travel etiquette, right?

In terms of amenities, expect things like fully-equipped kitchens, WiFi, AC, free parking, laundry facilities, and TVs. Some rentals in Brunei offer amenities like BBQ facilities, pools and fitness centres.

The 15 Top Airbnbs in Brunei

Right, I think you should have a pretty decent idea of what Brunei is like and we can now get into the real good stuff. I’m sure you’ve been waiting with bated breath, so here are my top 15 Airbnbs in Brunei.

Charming 6 Bedrooms Apartment in Central Gadong | Overall Best Value Airbnb in Brunei

Charming 6 Bedrooms Apartment in Central Gadong

When I think of value when it comes to an Airbnb in Brunei, the first thing that comes to mind is a well-priced unit that can sleep multiple people. I mean, I think this apartment hit the nail square on the head! It features 6 bedrooms and can sleep up to 13 guests – and it’s under $100 a night. What’s more, it’s been recently refurbished and features a modern interior with all the comforts of home that you’ll need during your stay.

The location is also great with a shopping mall a stone’s throw from the apartment. Here, you’ll find a supermarket, shops, cafes, and restaurants at your convenience. There’s also a Starbucks and Pizza Hut within walking distance if you don’t fancy making use of the kitchen. Although simple, it’s got the necessities for catering to your basic cooking needs.

Miniinn – Double room with shared bathroom | Best Budget Airbnb in Brunei

Miniinn – Double room with shared bathroom

From best value to best budget, the next rental in Brunei is for all those travellers out there on a shoestring budget. This perfect double room in an aparthotel is perfect for if you’re travelling as a couple or solo but heck, even two mates can share it! The room itself is simple, neat, and clean, boasting a double bed and a great little workspace for those who need it. A desk chair doubles up as a great clothes rest or spot for your backpack, as we all know.

There is a shared bathroom plus other shared spaces within the aparthotel that you will have access to during your stay. The location is also great with a a great mix of shops, restaurants, and the night market close by. The bonus is that the airport is only a 10-minute car ride/taxi away.

Vetiver Hills | Over-the-Top Luxury Airbnb in Brunei

Vetiver Hills (Whole Villa)

Next up, I have for you a sweet villa in Brunei that is the ideal spot if you’re travelling as a family or a group of mates. The villa can sleep up to 8 guests across its 3 bedrooms as well as an additional 2 guests on single and pull-out beds in the living room. The living room is also a great place to relax and unwind with its high ceilings, comfortable sofas and smart TV. Did someone say movie night?

There’s a fully-equipped kitchen for preparing meals with a great dining area to enjoy them, catering for up to 12 people. The best part of the house, though, is the outdoor swimming pool area. Not only is the pool epic in itself, but the surrounding patio area is great for lounging and relaxing in between dips. Think loungers and outdoor furniture for catching some rays, reading your book, or listening to that latest conspiracy theory podcast.

Kunyit 7 Lodge Water Village | Perfect Brunei Airbnb for Solo Travelers

Kunyit 7 Lodge Water Village

When travelling solo, either for work or leisure, you want something homely and comfortable. Well, that’s how I feel, at least, and this is exactly what you’ll get at Kunyit 7 Lodge. The private room is within a family home in the Kampong Ayer and is the perfect base to explore the cultural surroundings. Think the Royal Regalia Building, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, and the Kampung Air Cultural & Tourism Gallery.

Another really unique aspect of Kampong Ayer is that it’s the world’s largest settlement built on stilts over water. That in itself makes staying here super epic! The other upside about staying with a host that lives onsite is the recommendations and tips that you get. We so often miss out on things simply because we don’t know about them. Imagine the sinking feeling knowing that you never had the best ambuyat that money can buy – not cool.

Cosy Whistler Lodge Brunei | Perfect Short-Term Airbnb in Brunei for Digital Nomads

Cosy Whistler Lodge Brunei

Whistler Lodge in Bandar Seri Begawan is the ideal spot for digital nomads. The unit has plenty of sleeping space which makes it ideal for a larger group or families. Having said this, it can also work for a couple or even a few mates given that it’s so reasonably priced. I mean, come on, just over $40 a night between a few mates is cheap as chips!

The unit is based on two floors and has an industrial-style interior with all the essentials that you’ll need for a comfortable stay. You’ll have a full kitchen, TV with DVD player and sound system, private bathroom, high-speed WiFi, and an outside BBQ area. A really cool addition is the badminton and basketball facilities on the property if you fancy having a game with your mates.

Travel with peace of mind. Travel WITH a security belt.
Active Roots Security Belt

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

More Epic Airbnbs in Brunei

I’m just getting warmed up here, so here are some more epic Airbnbs in Brunei.

2-Bedroom | Bunut Centre Stay

2-Bedroom | Bunut Centre Stay

Next up is this simple yet kitted bungalow setup that can comfortably sleep 6 guests between two bedrooms and the living room. As such, it’s perfect for larger groups or a family with its versatile sleeping arrangements. It’s also perfectly suited for both kids and the elderly being a ground floor-based unit so you can take the whole family along.

You’ll have a full kitchen to be able to rustle up your daily meals in but there are also restaurants close by for your convenience. The supermarket is also within walking distance and the city centre is a mere 10-minute drive away. Aside from that, there’s fast WiFi, an HDTV, AC, luggage drop-off allowed, and free parking on the premises.

EZ Lodgings – Queen bedroom with large windows

EZ Lodgings - Queen bedroom with large windows

Right, the next rental in Brunei is aimed at those budget travellers out there looking for an affordable spot to stay. The unit takes the form of a double bedroom with a queen-sized bed, AC, and plenty of natural light. Located in the heart of Gadong, it’s only a short commute to things like local restaurants, the mall, and of course, the famous night market.

Aside from the use of the room, guests will have access to other common spaces within the buildings. There are two newly renovated bathrooms, a small lounge area for relaxing, and a kitchenette with all the basics. Simple, clean, and cosy – all you need as a solo traveller or backpacking couple.

Miniinn – Double room with Private Bathroom

Miniinn - Double room with Private Bathroom

You might recognise the name and no, I’m not going crazy! In the classic same same but different, same place, different room. Mini Inn is featured in my top 5 places but the lodge has multiple rooms and this is another one of them. It’s a neat, Nordic-themed double room that boasts a queen bed, dedicated workspace, and private bathroom, perfect for a couple or solo travellers.

Think of the space as a home away from home, located in Gadong in the heart of Brunei. The budget-friendly room is ideal for a short stay when passing through en route to your next destination. It’s also well-located within walking distance of local shops, restaurants, fast food outlets, and the bus stop.

Cosy & Lovely 3 Bedrooms Apartment by Home.bwn

Cosy & Lovely 3 Bedrooms Apartment by Home.bwn

The next rental in Brunei comes in the form of a 3-bedroom apartment, centrally located in Kiulap. The supermarket, restaurants, laundry facilities, and other local attractions like Bandarku Ceria are all within walking distance. The apartment offers ample sleeping space across its two bedrooms as well as in the living room, accommodating up to 8 guests.

In addition, there’s an equipped kitchen for all your cooking needs, free parking on the premises, a Smart TV, WiFi throughout, a portable karaoke box, and even a free massage chair. But I would say that the sunset views from the apartment are probably one of my favourite things about this place. I mean, who doesn’t love a good sunset?

Higher Point Apartment

Higher Point Apartment

Located in one of the most popular commercial areas of Brunei, Higher Point Apartment is the ideal spot for a family or travelling friends. It can accommodate up to six people across the three bedrooms, with a number of sleeping configurations. There are a number of restaurants and cafes close by as well as the local mall complete with a movie cinema.

Trade the Smart TV and Netflix for a big screen alternative because if you’re anything like me, you probably haven’t been to the cinema in yonks! In addition, you’ll have a full kitchen to make use of, adjacent to the open-plan living and dining room areas. One thing this place definitely doesn’t lack is space so you won’t feel cramped or on top of one another. We all know that feeling and don’t wish it upon anyone!

EZ Lodgings – Cozy room with queen pallet bed

EZ Lodgings - Cozy room with queen pallet bed

Now, you might be looking for a more budget-friendly Airbnb in Brunei for a short stay and what better spot than this cosy room. Located in a larger lodge with multiple options, the room boasts a queen bed and is ideal either for a couple or a solo traveller. Heck, why not share it with your mate sleep head-to-toe and save a few bucks? Again, you might recognize the name and you’re totally right. Just another one of EZ Lodgings room options.

The room is private but you’ll have access to other shared spaces such as the bathroom, kitchenette, and small lounge area. The location is also great and you’ll be within walking distance of the shops, restaurants, mall, and the night market. Sounds pretty decent to me!

Modern |3BedR+3BathR| (15pax) • Wifi • Netflix

Modern |3BedR+3BathR| (15pax) • Wifi • Netflix

The next apartment is the ideal spot for those larger groups of travellers looking for a comfortable spot with plenty of sleeping space. The 3-bedroom apartment can comfortably sleep 8 people across the rooms, with a variety of bed configurations. Then, in addition to the beds, the host is able to provide additional mattresses for numbers between 10 and 15 guests. Time to get cosy on the floor!

There’s also an awesome, fully-equipped kitchen for all those dining needs but nothing beats an outdoor BBQ, right? Well, you’re in luck because there just so happens to be an epic outdoor dining area complete with a BBQ grill. This might just be my favourite part of the entire place and you’d find me here 90% of the time. Did someone say grill master? Disclaimer – This is a self-proclaimed title, of course. You’re also a short drive from Brunei International Airport which makes this a great place to perch up.

Room 3 – Stylish Cozy Room in GADONG

Room 3 Stylish Cozy Room in GADONG

This next rental in Brunei is perfect for a couple of budget-conscious travellers looking for a simple, cosy spot for a short stay. The room is located in Neighbors Hostel and has been recently renovated into the stylish room that it now is. It’s uncomplicated and boasts a single bed and a sofa bed, with plenty of other shared spaces that guests can take advantage of.

There are shared bathrooms, a shared living and dining room, and a fully-equipped kitchen that guests can use to prepare their own meals. In addition, there’s free WiFi throughout, tea and coffee, laundry facilities, towels, sheets, and basic cosmetic products. During your stay, you’ll also get free breakfast included which helps to keep those travel costs down.

Kunyit 7 Lodge Water Village

Kunyit 7 Lodge water village-F2 room

The final Airbnb in Brunei takes us back to the water village of Kampong Ayer for a shared room setup. There is a possibility of sharing the room with another traveller so you could say it’s a two-bed dorm/homestay vibe. This is obviously not everyone’s cup of tea but I see it as a potentially cool opportunity to meet like-minded individuals.

The room also makes use of other shared facilities such as the bathroom and the sitting room area plus it includes breakfast. Overall, this spot is more about immersing yourself in the cultural side of Kampong Ayer. It’s recommended for those interested in discovering the fascinating stilt village and the people who call it home. I’d also say that if you’re looking for that perfect authentic and local feel, then it’s the place for you.

AYAD 6 Studio

AYAD 6 Studio @ Setia Kenangan II, Kiulap

To end off the first part of the best Airbnbs in Brunei is this studio apartment an ideal place for digital nomads. The studio follows a full open-plan format with the kitchenette, living room, bed, and desk all in one big open space. You can literally roll out of bed and be straight at the desk and working in seconds.

Speaking of the desk area, there’s not one but two desks so you and your partner/mate are covered. There’s also WiFi so you’ll be connected for the duration of your stay for those important emails, uploads, or Zoom calls. The studio is also within walking distance of the local restaurants, grocery stores, health care facilities, and even a sushi spot. I don’t know about you, but I’m sold!

FAQs About Airbnbs in Brunei

Here are a few of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to Airbnbs in Brunei:

What to Pack for Brunei

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for an Airbnb stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to pack in your backpack and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing.

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
